Traumatic Failed Colonoscopy

Hi. I'm hoping someone can give me advice on whether I could ask for Gen An. For a Full Colonoscopy to remove (Quite a Few) Polyps!! Had a Very Terrifying Failed Colonoscopy !! Sedation had No Affect and despite my Screaming for them to Stop they took no heed until I tried to throw myself off the bed!!! I was offered no Pain Relief at all until I was back on the ward when they offered 2 Paracetamol. They moved me into a side ward (Because I was upsetting other patients.. by Crying Hysterically)!!  Was left to feel like I was to blame & a pathetic nuisance! I've given birth 5 Times with just Gas &Air!! So I know I'm not a Wimp!  I'm even considering not going for this!! Even though it might be Cancer!! Please can someone HELP.????

  • Hi TheaW

Assuming your based in the UK and this via NHS that your having the colonoscopy done? If so then yes you can have it carried out under general as I have only had mine (twice before and another due on 14th Jan). Do ask if you haven't already for it to be carried out under GA and if they don't it could worth considering another hospital/DR who is more empathetic towards your situation!

    best of luck xx

  • Thank you sara1 thats great news!! Yes I'm NHS UK. Tho here in N.I. everything seems a bit behind the times! Still youve given me some hope and I'll definitely insist on G.A. or a different Consultant.

Best of Luck to you too for 14thxx

  • It's so horrible when this happens, I know as it happened to me twice, I refused the next one and they did it by a CT scan, dye injected and wonderful radiographer, so stand your ground and ask for another way of doing it.  Good luck, Carol

  • Yes, ask for a different consultant and insist on having one that is properly qualified and experienced in colonoscopy. Your traumatic experience might be due to the lack of experince of the consultant. The NHS is overstreched, understaffed and underfunded.

  • Hi there. Thanks for your support. Unfortunately Ivehad the C.T. Scan done (which was much better, thank goodness) but they've found (quite a few) polyps. So now need Full Blown Colonoscopy!! I've requested a chat with the Consultant and am going on 6th Feb.! I'm having trouble with my B.P. it's very high! So I'm worried about having to stop my B.P. Meds for 4 Days!!! Has anyone else had this problem? Apparently my current medication is not allowed!! As I've already had a T.I.A in the past I'm extremely worried!!?
