Positive HPV on smear - low risk?

Hi all - yes posting in Christmas day but I'm just worrying and thinking all the time.

I had a smear recently and the result said positive HPV. They booked me in for a coloscopy and when I spoke to the reception they said mine was low risk - but this wasn't mentioned in my letter. My husband kindly gave me genital warts - we have moved past this and they don't really affect me much but the doctor said it would be a different strain of HPV to show up in a smear test. I also (as of today when checking mirena as have had break though bleeds recently) discovered a small lump half way up the outside of my cervix - I appreciate this might be a cyst and that they are quite common, but the worry is overwhelming. I have 2 small children and, like most mothers, I tend to worry A LOT. This combined with pelvic pain on and off for then last 2 years which was deemed as Sacriolitis with no further investigation has left me panicking.

Anyone else had these combined issues? My last smear test 3 years ago was fine- when did they start testing for HPV?

Any thoughts would be helpful as I can't really discuss this with the family as don't want to worry them unduly.

Thank you

  • Hello Clauds85,

I am sorry to hear you are so worried about this positive HPV result. We have information on our website on HPV which you can find here and which I hope will reassure you and be useful to you. If you are still worried, try to talk to your doctor about this and I am sure they will be able to explain everything to you in detail and what it means to be tested positive for HPV.

Our nurses might also be able to explain things further to you - you can give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm (but their helpline is closed on 1st January).

I hope you get the reassurance you need soon so that you can manage to relax during this festive period.

    Best wishes,
