Hysteroscopy and acute anxiety

Hi all

I am new to the site and following some irregular, painful and ongoing (still ongoing) bleeding I was referred to a gynaecologist. I have been on HRT (bio-identical) for 5 years so have regular scans to check you womb lining. I had one only 8 weeks ago which seemed to be find. Lining of endometrium was 3mm.

Gynacologist was very reassuring but referred me for another scan which was not quite so healthy. Womb lining has increased to 8mm. He thinks it's most likely an imbalance in the HRT (maybe I'm a bit forgetful with it) but says I need to have a hysteroscopy and obviously they are looking to hopefully rule out endometrial cancer. I am trying not to panic about it but I suffer actute health anxiety so want to get it done asap. Gynae said he can squeeze it in this Friday but that will be without sedation.

I'm generally pretty stoic but I seem to have menstual like cramps all the time at the moment and the idea of anyone sticking a scope up right now there fills me with dread. I also am very prone tp panic attacks. The idea of not knowing what I'm dealing with though is equally difficult. I can hardly sleep, work, eat etc for worry.

He said he would do it under anaesthetic but that is likely to be after Christmas.

I wondere dif anyone could share their experience of a hysteroscopy - many people say it is dreadful. I don't like smears much and I recall a colposcopy about 20 years ago leaving me emotionally traumatised. I'd apporeciate any thoughts on whether I should just be brave and go for it or wait and get put to sleep.

I had open heart surgery this year and frankly this is terrifying me more.

I'd be so grateful for any words of wisdom

  • Hi Kerry

I appreciate that everyone is different but I had a hysteroscopy while awake and had no problems with it at all. I had no pain while having it done-the nurse was holding my hand and chatting away to distract me while it was going on and it didn’t take very long to do. At the time I had it done I was bleeding and had pelvic pain, so my priority was to get as many tests carried out as I could to see what was going on and I didn’t want to wait.

I suffer from anxiety, but have no issues with having any form of internal exam, so I appreciate it might be different for you given past experiences. If you decide to go ahead without anaesthetic, I can recommend relaxation techniques in advance of the procedure, and you could ask your gp to prescribe something like diazepam to take to relax you. If you decide you really want anaesthetic, hopefully you won’t have too long to wait to get it done. xx

  • Hi Kerry,

Sorry you are going through a difficult time . I had a hysterscopy and pipelle biopsy and polypectomy , just over 5 years ago for endometrial cancer . I too suffer from severe anxiety , I was at the time of mine unaware it could be done with a GA.  I just had a injection into the cervix and was advised to take some pain killers before  hand .As the  other  lady said the nurse holds your hand and talks to you..  Just thought i would tell you my experience  . Good luck with your decision as to how  you choose to proceed  you must do what is suitable for you.Hope you get a appointment soon and all the best with your results . Big hugs coming your way  ( HUGS)
