Bowel cancer worries

Hi I was diagnosed with endometriosis 18 months ago. I have been back to my doctor several times now with changes in bowel habits (sometimes days of diarrhea followed by constipation)  pain during/after sex, bloating, pelvic pain.

My gp has now referred me to a gynae clinic and thinks my endometriosis has spread. I am worried it could be bowel cancer. The referral time is over 3 months. I have seen advertised  a stool sample kit you can pay for that will test for bowel cancer. Is this correct? Is there a recommended/trusted company for this?

Many thanks

  • Hi Jen,

A stool test will show if there is blood present in your stool. Blood can be a sign of cancer but also many other things. You could ask at any chemist about how to get the stool sample kit, or if they can recommend one. You could also get a kit from your GP free of charge. You can insist that you want to do the test for your peace of mind.

I think you are being clever doing that test and I think all adults should do it every two years or so, because the sooner bowel cancer is caught the better.

The 3 month delay for gynae clinic is rather long, you may be able to go private and the bill being picked up by the NHS because of the long wait for a condition that is serious. Get some advice about your patient's rights.

All the best and don't stress too much.
