referred for breast screening

Hi everyone,

I recently found a lump in my breast after having breast pain in both my breasts. I had recently stopped taking my contraceptive pill and thought it was just due to my cycle starting back up. I went to my GP and she advised me that she thought it was a cyst as the lump moves and the pain caused by pressure of touching it, she advised me to go back after a couple of weeks. A few weeks in and still my breast was sore and the lump still present so I went back to my GP and she said the lump is still present but she wasnt overall worried but she has referred me to have a breast screening to be on the safe side. I am only 29 and have a daughter so as you can imagine my head is all over the place and I'm just wondering if they will be able to tell me the same day if its serious or not?

    HI there

    Natural to be worried, however I would take compfort from the fact that your GP thinks its a cyst and the lump is movable. The GP is doing the right thing in sending you to the breast clinic as only they have the technology to see insode the breast, its just like being referred to ENT for sinus problems - referrals to breast clinics do not always mean suspected cancer. The breats specialists will be able to tell you on the day what it is and if you need further tests. Try not to worry x

    Just thought I would reply as I went for my breast clinic appt today, I am also only 28 and have a 4 year old daughter so I totally understand where you are coming from.

    I thought I would share my experience. 

    I arrived at 10:30 and was seen almost straight away. I had an ultrasound but they didn't say much but seemed optimistic. This was with a breast surgeon and then he asked me to put on a gown and wait in another room.

    I waited around an hour with some other ladies, only women are allowed in here. I thought I should let you know in case you go with your partner as I did, but all of the ladies were lovely, all in gowns and only around 10 of us.

    I was called through and there was 2 girls, again lovely who told me to take my gown off lay on the bed and put it over my chest. The radiologist then came in and did an ultrasound. He was very nice, he told me it looked like another fibroadenoma but would do a biopsy.

    He did it there and then which scared me as I had one before and it was very painful as the needle is very thick and scary but that was 12 years ago and although the needle is still scary and I am only telling you so you know what to expect. They now ise local anaesthetic and I can promise you after that you won't feel a thing. He then put the big needle in and I shut my eyes, got to where he needed to be which isn't painful but uncomfortable and then he said try not to jump, and it's almost like the needle is spring loaded and clips to do the biopsy. He then did it a second time.

    Looks sound and feels scary but I promise you no pain! I only went into detail and it looks and sounds worse than it is.

    Went back to main waiting room to see breast surgeon and again he said no worried, and ill get results in a couple of weeks.

    I went this week for further investigations as something was found on my annual mammogram, I totally understand your anxieties,I had an ultra sound and the doctor performed an aspiration, luckily mine was a cyst, this group really helped me with my anxieties, my boob was also sore when I applied any pressure, the procedure for me was a physical examination then the ultra sound where they then drained the cyst (it doesn't hurt) then back for a mammogram and if it's a cyst it will disappear, hopefully this will be the case for you Hun, please let us know how you go on, take care xx
