New Diagnosis of ovarian and peritoneal cancer

Hi, my name is Alison and I am 49 years old. I was fast approaching my 50th birthday with excitement and a three week trip to Thailand with my husband. I had been suffering from left-sided abdominal pain for three months and last Wednesday I was diagnosed with ovarian and peritoneal cancer (although waiting for full results from biopsies). I have always been a worrier and I am shocked by my response. I do feel very low at times especially as its Christmas time and I don't know if this is my last Christmas with my grown-up children or one of many so how do I make it special and memorable but not like its the last?? I seem to just be getting through each day ok and its almost like it hasn't really happened aside from the meds and practical stuff that needs doing. My husband has been more than I could ever have hoped. Do you think these feelings are ok? not really sure what I should be feeling...

Can now update - 5 hours later and feel incredibly sad and angry... a rollercoaster

  • Hello AlisonO

Welcome to the forum and I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. I'm not sure that there is any "right" way to feel when you're given news such as you have but what I will say from reading many, many posts here on the forum is that there are a lot of other members who will be able to recognise what you've described. It really is like being on an emotional rollercoaster. I'm going to link this page from our website which you might find helpful.

I'm really glad to hear that your husband has been so supportive. It certainly helps to have someone to be able to lean on. Hopefully when you have your results and have a better idea about what treatment the Consultant feels would be best you'll be better able to plan with your family what you want to do for Christmas.

Here at Cacner Resaerch Uk we also have a team of nurses that you can call to speak to and I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat things through with them. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Alison and let us know how you're doing.

    Best wishes,
