Bowel cancer spread to peritoneum

Good Evening all,

Completely new on the forum and just giving it a try to see if others have been in this position and how they managed to get through it.

3 weeks ago my stepdad went to the doctors with a sore stomach and was referred immediately to hospital. After undergoing a scan, they detected a tumour inside his large intestine.

My stepdad underwent surgery to have the tumour removed however it had already spread to his peritoneum and has metastasised  within his lymph nodes.

We were informed that this is not able to be cured by treatment and that the only option is palliative chemo. He is in severe pain at the moment and on strong pain killers. This is extremely hard to watch him suffer at home in this way and even harder to process in our heads that he is likely to only have months left to live.

Any advice greatly appreciated,

Andy

  • Hello Andy,

I'm very sorry to hear that your StepDad has recently been given this news. Understandably it's a difficult time for you all.

Has your Dad been referred to the palliative care team yet or a local hospice service? They will be able to assist in getting his pain relief under control and once this is done hopefully he'll be more comfortable. If you've not had any contact with this kind of service as yet then do speak to the hospital team or contact his GP to explain the situation.

If you'd like to speak to one of our nurses for some advice and support then you're welcome to call them. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
