Large cyst on kidney - worried.

Hi all, I've not posted on here before and not sure if I've put it in the correct section but I am very anxious.

Three weeks ago, I had an ultrasound scan on my upper abdomen. I suffer from IBS and had asked for this scan myself just to rule out gallstone etc (even though I have no pain just wanted to rule it out).

The sonographer said all was ok but she noted there was a cyst on my left kidney. I asked if I would need that looked at and she said no, they were quite common.

Anyhow, unbeknownst to me, when scan results came to my gp she noted that the cyst was large (6x4 cm) and contacted the Urology department at my local hospital for advice. They never got back to her but instead I got an unexpected call from the ct scan department to have an urgent ct scan ASAP. I had it done (in a shocked state) and then went to see gp. She was quite shocked as she said she had only asked for advice and wasn't particularly concerned as the ultrasound scan report didn't come to her as urgent and it was described as a cyst with no obvious blood supply on the Doppler test. She had asked for advice purely due to the size of the cyst.

I tried to relax and today phoned my gp surgery to see if the results are in but they say that the are going to be 'discussed' in a meeting at the hospital tomorrow. I am now beside myself, I have tried calling the urologist secretary but it's just an answerphone and she hasn't replied to my message.

I feel in the dark and scared and I haven't even seen this urologist at all so have no idea what is going on.

Why would they discuss this at a meeting unless it was for something concerning?

  • Welcome to the forum Becky although I'm sorry for the reason you're joining us.

It can be scary finding out that results are being discussed in a meeting but I hope our cancer nurse's reply to another member who asked about MDT meetings helps to put your mind at ease a bit.

I hope you won't be waiting much longer to find out what's going on but if you'd like to talk things through with someone then do give our cancer nurses a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,
