Alternative to Letrozole

I was recommended to have a left breast mastectomy in November2017 as it was thought I had DCIS throughout the breast. Thank goodness I went ahead as 1.7mm of invasive cancer was found.  Initially I was put on Tamoxifen, but was switched to Letrozole in April 2019, apparently due to blood test indicating I was post menopausal.  I am 54, 55 in January.  Hot flushes were a nightmare with Tamoxifen so I was hoping for the best with Letrozole. Sadly, the hot flushes are almost as prevalent but the bone, joint and muscle pain are really get me down. I feel like a 75 year old! :(  My bone scan in April showed I already have osteopenia, so continuing with Letrozole scares me. I am seriously considering coming off them. Are there any less scary alternatives?

    Hi Haysey-Sunshine,

Have a chat with your oncologist or breast care nurse. There ae other alternatives. I agree with you. I took Tamoxifen for 1 year, developed a second breast cancer and changed to Letrozole after I had a double mastectomy. I was first diagnosed 10 years ago and despite it's awful side-effects, I guess I owe the fact that I am still here to a skillful surgeon and Letrozole. I took it for 6 years and stopped taking it in July 2017.

I still have the night sweats and joint pains and, had to have both knees replaced as well as five eye operations during treatment - a small price to pay for life.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
