Cervical cancer? 24

Hi all.

Would a doctor be able to see cervical cancer from a pelvic examination? (Naked eye)

Thank you

  • Hi there

It is a possibility but not a certainty. I had a tumour which was visible to the naked eye but I must stress that this is just my personal experience as a cervical cancer patient, and I am not a medical professional. xx

  • I'm 24 and i've had irregular bleeding on and off for four years, i am however on cerazette mini pill so always put it down to this (spotting maybe 3 times a year) however on three occassions i have bled after sex. Again this is in a 5 year period so very infrequent.

Pelvic exam was normal just excess discharge apparantly. I'm 24 so my first smear is on the 8th of Dec.

I have had sciatic like pain/low back pain for months now that I didnt think anything of however now im scared its advanced cervical cancer however im hopinh since my gp didnt see anything abnormal on my pelvic exam that its unrelated x

  • Hi...if you had advanced cervical cancer, I do believe you would know about it because you would definitely have symptoms! There could be many reasons for your current symptoms, not necessarily cancer but I do understand it’s easy to think the worst when you have unexplained symptoms and you connect them in your head and self diagnose.

The smear test is a screening test to check for abnormal cells, not diagnose cervical cancer, and if you’ve had a visual check done by a doctor and nothing unusual has been seen then hopefully your test will be clear and you’ll get some reassurance.

Meanwhile I would recommend that you don’t use google to make conclusions...it’s a scary place full of out of date information and scare stories which could drive you crazy! xx

  • Thank you.. I am a worrier in general. I just feel scared because i've had bleeding for around five years and because its so infrequent I never really paid attention to it. Stupid I know but on my mini pill irregular bleeding can be common. Ish.

I know its unlikely at 24 but also know it can happen. Just angry at myself for not pushing for a smear when I bled from sex. The last time I bled after sex was in December 2017 so I would hope if it was anything sinister it would have happened more often? But I dont know how it works xx

  • Yes, it can happen but it’s rare. And honestly...I know from my own cervical cancer and from speaking to many women with this cancer, we had lots of symptoms. Many women have bleeding after sex on a very regular basis..or every single time. It’s much more likely that you have some breakthrough bleeding from being on the pill or some other reason which is not cancer. Try not to spend your time worrying about something which is extremely unlikely! xx

  • Hi,

I am  a cervical cancer survivor. Mine was stage 2A and by the time I sought treatment,  I had some pretty nasty symptoms. I was incredibly fatigued, couldn't eat, lost a bunch of weight and had a really smelly, watery discharge that was tinged with blood. My tumor was visible to the naked eye, apparently. I was 48 at the time and a heavy smoker.

I also had bleeding after sex in my younger years, and it was related to my birth control pill. I am not a medical professional, but I don't think you should be too worried about cancer at your age, just make sure to follow up and get all the tests. If it is something, you'll get it taken care of right now before it develops any further.

    Laura xx
