Small breast lump

I found a small lump on the side of my right breast about 6 weeks ago have been to the doctors a few times and she was saying it was a cyst , but has now referred me to the breast clinic under the 6 week referral think it's protocol because of my age 34 ! I have also noticed now that my right nipple seems slightly lower than my left , I'm large breasted so it could be just sagging as the breast but it has me very worried how , I have a 3 year old boy , and 6 weeks seems such a long time to wait

  • Hi Elle

Six weeks is along time to wait, suspicion of cancer is a two week referral. So I imagine your GP thinks this is just a cyst and therefore has not put you on the cancer pathway. GPs know when they feel a lump if its suspicious or not, a cancerious lump has a certain feel to it. Why not go back to your GP, tell her about your nipple and ask about the likelyhood that this could be serious - if only to put your mind at rest.

  • Hiya

Thank you for the reply I showed the gp the nipple this morning and she agreed there was a slight difference and checked both my breasts and said they feel normal ! The lump is up near my armpit , she also said the 6 week referral was a guideline time ! I'm in Ireland so I just looked up online and they are saying non urgents apps are taking 6-12 months this can't be right ? I am going to go back to gp again

  • 6-12 months - that's shocking are you in Eire?

I did a quick search and came across this

    www.hse.ie/.../breast-cancer-referral-guideline.pdf

so you should be seen within 6 weeks

  • Any brest or armpit lump should be checked under the 2 week rule whatever your age. (This is UK and may be different in Ireland )

Do chase your gp. Explain that the stress and worry are causing you to feel unwell and depressed. This sometimes helps to move a stubborn gp. Also you can ask for a second opinion or just go to a different gp.

I hope you are seen soon to put your mind to rest. It is a scary time, even if it proves to be benign. I wish you well and hope it turns out your gp was right in the end.
