Very stubborn HPV! Worried.

Hello,

Looking for some advice or to hear from anyone else who has had a similar experience.

Me in brief:

-I had my first abnormal smear at 25 - borderline changes, HPV present. Nothing found at Colposcopy.

- At 26 - mild changes, hpv present. Nothing found at colposcopy, except slightly 'viral appearance' on cervix (was never told what that meant despite asking)

- At 27 - very mild changes. Had colposcopy, nothing found. Back to three year screening

- At 30 - very mild changes, hpv present. Small biopsy at colposcopy to be safe, results were normal.

- At 31 - normal result. No mention of HPV

- At 32 - normal result - HPV present. Smear in 12 months

Now I know that I have been fortunate with my results and I am very grateful but the fact that the damn HPV won't seem to go is driving me crazy and is making me feel like I could be a ticking cancer time bomb. I had the vaccine at 25 on the advice of my gynae consultant to prevent infection with other strains of HPV and I have only been in an intimate relationship with one person in the past 4 years (am single and celibate now), so my guess is this is the same HPV I've had the whole time...

Has anyone else experienced this? I keep being told the body is likely to naturally clear it but why won't mine? I try to be as healthy as possible - don't smoke, minimal alcohol, good amount of exercise, eat lots of fruit and veg etc. What else can I do? Would a supplement to help immunity help?

The only other thing I can think of is it's because I'm on the Pill. I'm reluctant to come off as without it my hormones can go bonkers and can cause bad thrush, migraines, bad tummy upsets. But maybe I should try not taking it anymore...

Also, might be a silly question but can sex with a new partner make abnormal cells come back? If I do meet someone else I'm scared this might happen.

I'm so frustrated and just feel like I'm waiting for the HPV to cause lots of trouble. Any advice or thoughts would be gratefully received xxx

  • Hi SarahEL,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can certainly understand this is a little concerning and something you'd like to get some answers for. Unfortunately I'm not really able to advise - it's best to get medical answers from your doctor if you can.

If you'd like to discuss anything with our nurses, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5 - they may be better placed to help with your questions.

Meanwhile if anyone here has any similar experience then hopefully they'll be along soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
