Oncology test result conclusive

Recently had lumpectomy to remove 4.5mm grade III cancer.  ER8, HER2 borderline negative, lymph nodes negative.  All cancer removed.  So far so good

Just seen oncologist who has confirmed that oncology test result is conclusive and that I would benefit from 6 rounds of chemo prior to radiotherapy and hormone blocking drugs.   He said I had a 19% chance of recurrence within next 9 years.

I am struggling a bit with this and know I should ask more questions.   My journey so far, although stressful and scary, has produced the best I results I could have hoped for from a pretty rotten situation.  The idea of chemo seems to have floored me more than I had imagined simply because I've had confirmation that they removed the cancer and it had not spread into lymph nodes.   I feel like I want to know what the chemo is buying me in terms of reducing or even eliminating that "19% in 9 years" statistic.

It's early days.  I have so many questions. This forum has been a tremendous support throughout my journey to this point, just to read about the experiences of so many strong people, to be able to draw on that strength is better than any medicine.

  • Hi Sputnik56 and welcome to the forum.

I'm so glad that reading through the forum has given you support to this point in your journey. I really hope that we're able to help give you some information and support through the next part.

We do have some information about the oncotype test on our website here which may help answer some of your questions. I'm going to suggest that you also give our team of nurses a call as they are probably better able to give you some further advice and support.

When you've been to the breast clinic were you given contact details for a specialist nurse? Don't be afraid to write down all your questions and get in touch with them as well to ask for more information specific to your situation. That is part of their role.

If you want to read through some posts on here where oncotype test is specifically mentioned then you can use the search function (magnifying glass on the blue bar at the top of the page) to search for the term oncotype. If there's a post then that you feel you want to reply to hopefully you'll be able to chat with others who have been advised to have chemo on the basis of their oncotype result.

I hope that some of this helps. Keep in touch and let us know how you're get on.

    Best wishes,
