Referred for a colposcopy before smear results.

Hi all,

i’m new here. I recently had a smear this week after not having one for nearly 8 years. I have only two symptoms which is discharge and lower back pain however, both i put a reason for them like body changing after a baby etc. No one I know really talks about discharge and quite frankly I found it rather embarrassing. I had a negative Sti test so I thought it was fine. During my examination the nurse said I had started to bleed quite a bit and said that my cervix was really red, raw and angry. Her face said a 1000 words. After the examination I bled quite heavy for some time. The nurse told me that she would be sending an urgent referral even without having the smear results. I’m a bit worried now, it’s my own fault I should have had thesme smear 5 years ago when the symptoms started. Just wanted to know if anyone else had been referred before having the results?

  • Hi,

no they didn't really go into too much depth about why just said it can happen basically, I'm due to go back any day I spoke with my gp in regards to it last week as I have a swollen lymph node behind my ear for the last 7 weeks but I asked about my smear and she said they stopped for a period at the start of covid outbreak but they have resumed so I shouldn't be to long in waiting for the letter to come. She did however tell me that when I do go explain about being hpv negative as she said it's very unusual and not for me to slip through the net (if that makes sense) I'll be honest with you the waiting is the worst and the unknown I had convinced myself I had it as I had the symptoms for a few years and had missed having a smear done for about 8 years so I was relieved in a way when I had my results. All I can say is try and get out and have a nice walk and clear your head or try and use some distraction techniques until Monday, also if you have any possible questions or enquiries you may have write them down ready for Monday Just incase you forget. Have you spoke with any friends or family about it? I spoke with one of my colleagues in work as she had previously had something similar which helped a bit as to what happens next after colposcopy clinic. It's surprising how many people are in the same shoes or who have been in the past. I would say I bled a lot and was sore after so take some paracetamol with you and a pad also as a just incase (I had to ask them for one) xx

  • Thank you very much for your advice and I really hope you get some positive news and don't need anymore treatment.

i have family and friends but they are worried sick so not exactly helpful in making me feel any less anxious if you know what I mean.

i think on Monday they will refer me for an urgent colposcopy. I think a telephone Consultation is a bit pointless as it's not like they can examine me to give me any kind of answers. So bit annoying really.
Could I ask what type of discharge you had? Mine is like a brown discharge, like at the end of your period :(. Not very nice. Take care and thank you again for replying xx

  • Hi Casey123,

I totally empathise with you I bet your thoughts are racing with it all it's a shame that it's a telephone consultation however I do hope that it will provide you with some reassurance or some advice to prepare you for when you go for your appointment.

So my discharge is sometimes a pale colour most of the time however, at sometimes it's rusty/brown colour sometimes like as if I'm spotting if that makes sense.

  • Hi hannah

yes mine is very similar discharge. When are you due you go back? 3 weeks must of been along time for you to wait for results:( I'm not sure how I'll deal with that x

  • Hi Casey123,

yeah but they sent a letter before hand with the treatment I was going to have because we had previosly discussed it as they thought it was the lining of my womb, I had the results given to me the same time then when I was there. I am due now to go back but I'm giving it till August as they did stop them for a period of time so u'll chase it up then if I still haven't heard.
