Advice needed ASAP please!!

I've had ongoing mouth issues for nearly 4 months now, at first my doctor thought it was geographic tongue and I was treated for that, nothing. And then one suggested mouth thrush and again treated, nothing.

Now a specialist has suggested it could be oral lichen planus and prescribed me Hydrocortisone tablets but they don't seem to be working. I'm only 16 and eat reasonably well so don't understand why and how this could be happening to me, I don't smoke or drink either!

I would appreciate some guidance as to what to do to at least relieve the symptoms as it's always spreading and stressing me out a lot, I'm so concerned that it could develop into oral cancer as it seems to be spreading all the time. Thanks :)

  • Hello Adviceseeker and welcome.

I'm sorry to hear that you've had these health concerns for a while now and that at the moment the treatments don't seem to be helping.

You mention that you've seen a specialist and I'm presuming that this is someone at the hospital that your GP referred you to see. Do you have another appointment arranged to see them? Sometimes treatments can take a little while to start to make a difference but if you're worried that it's getting worse then do get in touch with the specialist or your GP again for advice.

You might find it helpful to chat with others who have been diagnosed with OLP on this thread
I do hope that things improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hiya,

It was only a specialist doctor at my local GP. The treatments aren't helping at all and yet they seem to not be concerned or even bothered to talk to me, everyday there are new strange spots and lines all in my mouth that burn and it scares me so much but I'm not sure what else I can do. I'm thinking about just going to my dentist instead and seeing if she knows what it is because at this point I'm just frustrated and confused. Everyone I talk to tells me to stop being dramatic as I'm only young so it "can't be that bad". It's getting me down a lot :(

    thanks

  • Go to your doctor and asked to be referred to the hospital who will do a biopsy. I had a biopsy and it’s oral lichen planus
