Oesophageal Cancer - currently having Flot treatment

I've got cancer in my oesophagus and am undergoing FLOT treatment. Have undergone one cycle and hopefully start round 2 on Thursday. So far so good. Constipation being the biggest bugbear up to now. That transformed with the aid of sennakot to diarrhoea which has calmed down now after about a week. Tiredness/nausea come and go  and on day 9 I felt pretty much normal and ventured out for a beer yesterday. 6/10. No problems !!!  The cold syndrome I felt in my hands on a few occasions and I didn't push the cold drinks. Everything at room temperature and above. The horrible taste in my mouth persists. Pineapple chunks help but can cause sore mouth/ulcers. The hardest part I had was injecting the filgrastim in my stomach. Finally got my head around it and it's a doddle. Round2 starts10/10 for 24hrs. Will report back.

  • Hi there and welcome ..

I've just seen you thought this post has passed by .. so l looked it up and just wanted to give you a little thought .. you put the heading under "flot" well most of us on here are just people with cancer or caring for someone with cancer.. along with the moderators and nurses .. trying to answer those threads as much as we can ..

The thing about this site is it has got quite popular and a lot more people are posting on here then when I came by 2 years ago ... because there's quite a few we look for the tittle we know something about .. unfortunately l dont know what "flot" is so I'd have left it for someone who knew more then me ..

Now if you'd put it under "just starting treatment" someone would have picked it up .. but no matter how hard we try, some threads will slip by .. that's why it's good to always look for threads your interested in and join in too .. hope that helps a tad .. and it will send your thread back to the start and hopefully someone will pick it up, who knows more about flot ...   Chrissie x

  • Thanks. FLOT chemo is a particular type. I get your point. Will try to expand the title a bit next time.

  • Good luck .. keep trying ... one of our gents had oesophageal cancer.. [@davek]‍  .. hopefully if he pops on , he'll see your thread ...  Chrissie  ; ))

  • Yes obviously it's all new to me. But the first cycle went down pretty much ok. Big improvement from day 6/7. Able to go for a beer etc over w/end and red deer watching today. 2nd cycle starts Thursday. So if it follows a similar pattern will have a few minor probs for a few days.

  • Hiya,

Welcome to the forum. Don't worry if it takes a while to get a response, it can be a bit random. I tend to notice any posts with oesoph... in the subject line but I've been offline with a bad mixture of work and a cold for a couple of days.

I've no experience of FLOT but I do of EOX. The O in both is Oxalyplatin ... which can be a bit of a ***, especially in Winter. I had two of my sessions during a very cold snap and was advised to take a flask of warm water with me on my way home in case the constrictions caused my airways to block!

Private message me if you have any queries - we're not allowed to use hospital names in the open forum but it would be interesting to know where you go for chemo as I'm now living in Warrington but Lancaster born and it isn't a million miles away from Cumbria.

Good luck with your treatment ;-)

    Dave

  • Thanks for response. Start cycle 2 on Thursday. 1st round was ok. Worst thing being constipation/diarrhoea. Was pretty careful with cold. A little bit of tingling in hands but every drink was at room temp or above for about 6/7dys and I've been for a beer from Saturday onwards. Live in Penrith with chemo in Carlisle. Operation is in Newcastle around Xmas/NewYear. Will post regularly on experiences.

  • Hello Cumbrialad, FLOT stands for the first letter of each of the four chemo drugs, I believe. My husband is to have his first on Thursday. He is calmer than me....and fitter, except for the cancer of course. I have been silently imagining the worst for him, Your post is very reassuring, thank you, we are on a similar path, op possibly in December some distance away from home, more chemo. We have found FORCE very helpful.

Wow, red deer spotting...my husband loves Countryfile

All the very best for your treatment ....will follow your posts.  pilgrim

  • Everybody's reaction may be different but they're nothing you can't cope with hopefully. Getting my head around injecting myself was interesting but ultimately a doddle. I start my cycles on a Thursday. By following Friday basically back to normal. Best of luck to all
