New to this...squamous cell skin cancer on back of hand

Just found out today that I have squamous cell skin cancer on the back of my hand. Only been there are couple of weeks, started very small, but has got bigger. Saw GP Monday, hospital appointment today, Tuesday 10th, and being operated on to remove on Thursday! wow, quick or what!! something ot do with me going on holiday to Turkey on 24th September I suppose. Anyone else on here recently had this procedure?

  • Hello mscross,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It's good that you saw the GP quickly and that things are now moving incredibly fast and you don't have to wait long to have your operation. In fact it looks like you may have already had the surgery yesterday and I hope that everything went well for you. We have information on our website on surgery for skin cancer which you can access here and I hope others who have had the same procedure before will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

Wishing you a super speedy recovery so that you can fully enjoy your holiday in Turkey! Lucky you it will be a good time to have a lovely break in the sunshine hopefully

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you Lucie.  All done, bit sore but otherwise OK. Only one worry - was told to have stitches out on 23rd (day before I go on holiday) which is a few days earlier than they would've liked, however, phoned surgery first thing this morning to be told 2 x practice nurses fully booked on 23rd and a doctor won't do it as it' a "nurse" job. Surgery offered to search the "hub" system to find a surgery somewhere in Southampton that could do it  on 23rd- apparently nothing  available in the whole of Southampton and the only appointment available is on  21st which is only 9 days after the op so am wondering if this is too soon as hospital thought 23rd was earliest it should be done.
