Scared about my sons symptoms

hi everyone. My 5 year old sons been having symptoms for few months now.  Vomiting sleeping long hours through the day

weaker bruising out of nowhear getting worse everyday pale skin just a different child iv been back and forth to gp

with my concerns quite a few times they just basically said it me with my anxiety he’s fine

I myself request a blood test not them they wasn’t even going to agree to it at one point first results show low neutrophils second results show low platelets. He’s now been refarred to a haematologist I hope the appointment ain’t to far away I’m worried sick. Just wondered if any other parent as experienced similar or the same

and any ideas how long it usually takes to get appointment with haematologist, and what to expect from

the appointment, thanks in advance any advise or help will be very much appreciated,

  • I do not not have any knowledge about your sons symptoms. However I speak as a mum and I feel your frustration, please keep chasing up the appointment with the haemotiogist. Ring every day, Ask questions, speak to someone higher if you can, go to another GP. You have to be persistent! My son has been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer in January . He had hurt his leg playing football and his symptoms came and went over 6/7 weeks. I didn’t trust the Drs surgery as it was Xmas time and his first GP didn’t even look at his leg! instead I sat in A and E and asked for an X-ray (no real reason for doing this, I just felt as a parent that something  wasn’t right). From that night everything happened very fast and my son was diagnosed 23 days later and treatment started immediately . I am not angry as I bypassed the GP ( thankfully). I have come across many parents who were visiting GPS and A and E for months, sometines over a year before they were listened to and their child diagnosed with this rare bone cancer. You must be persistent - you know your own child. I hope everything is ok, but it is best to have things checked and quickly. If you have any questions please pm me.

I don’t mean to scare you, I can feel your frustration and as parents we want to do everything we can for our children. Wishing you all the best and that everything is ok. It is best to rule out worst case scenarios. My son only had pain, no other symptoms and he continued to work and play football during those 6/7 weeks!

  • sorry to hear about your son, it must be devastating

to have that news about your child, I’m so scared

I can’t understand why they ain’t doing these tests quicker

im going to look in to a private haematologist today hoping

we can get a soon appointment, he’s already been through

so much, thank you for your reply it’s good to hear from

other parents who as experienced similar rather then being

fobbed off by doctors x hope all the best for you and your son x

  • Thank you for your kind words.

If you pay privately I expect you would get an appointment within days. We have private health cover which I havent needed to use as my son has such a rare cancer and there are only 5 specialist hospitals in UK. We were also told that children have priority on NHS.  I would pay for the haemotologist so that you are not waiting and worrying. I used my private cover years ago for something else and I got an appointment within 2 days.

    good luck with everything x
