Child with swollen Supraclavicular Lymph node

Over a week ago my 8 year old daughter noticed a lump on the left hand side of her neck. We took her to the pharmacy initially and they thought it might be a cyst due to the location and size. We then went to out of hours doctor who thought it might be a cyst as well.

When the doctors surgery opened on a Monday we took her for a check-up and the doctor noticed a few small lymph nodes on her right-hand side and said the lump on the left-hand side was a supraclavicular lymph node, she told us to come back after a week as it was most likely related to a mild cold she had the week earlier. We returned after a week and nothing has changed she still has the swelling with no tenderness and is well in her self other than the swollen lymph node.

The doctor has now given us a 2-week referral and never gave much more info ( I am calling her again tomorrow). In the meantime, I’ve booked a private paediatric ENT specialist so that I can try and get her looked at sooner.

Me and my wife are worried sick and trying not to look too much up on google but anything I’ve seen with lack of tenderness and supraclavicular nodes all point to grim diagnosis.

Sorry for rambling on, so worried and struggling to find info that’s not medical journals etc online.

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Hi there ...

Oh my, no wonder your so worried ... but hold on as much as you can ... as she will pick up on your panic ..  nothing has been diagnosed yet .. and the 2 week refural is normal... your right not to Google symptoms... they make everything look worst case scenario... so many go on there and come away, feeling overwhelmed...

I know what it's like with our babies .. when my lad was young he got diagnosed type one diabetic... and his life changed from that day .. but you know, we have to hold it together for our babies .. that's what we do .. panic inside but look calm outside ... for them ... and fingers crossed for a good result ... try to keep busy as poss ... there's far more have these tests and it turns out something else ...  Chrissie x

  • Thank you so much for replying :) I am trying my best to keep it together for my wife and daughter and not letting my other kids notice I am worried about something. Just so hard waiting when it’s your kids, I am desperate to get her seen and make sure she’s ok but understand I’ll need to wait a little, I am speaking to her doctor tomorrow so hoping she can give me more info.

  • Hi ...

Don't worry, it's normal to panic ... I did with my lad when I found out everything that could happen with his diabetes... I cryed for weeks ... untill he told me he could cope with that but not me crying all the time ..  so I turned it around and learned everything I could to keep him healthy .. though I nearly lost him twice to hypos ...

Once I took it on, we all coped better ... it's like my cancer now ... it's looking it square in the eye, and getting ready to fight it all the way .. then my lad panicked over me ... till we got that in control too ..  you'll always find someone here to chat too .. we know how scary the weight is ... so if you need to yell or vent or just chat .. this is the place ...    Chrissie x

  • hi

was just wondering how your daughter is

my son 9 years old is going through the same

  • Hi , how is your son ? hope its all fine

  • Hi All :)

Sorry for the late reply on this.

After several weeks I initially got a private consultation with a pediatric ENT doctor, he said it was most likely a reactive node but told me to go to the NHS appointments to get a second opinion.

We then went to the NHS ent appointment and they also thought it was a reactive node but said to put our mind at ease and rule anything out they would arrange a ultrasound of the area. We waited a few weeks and got that appointment, we went in the she was scanned quickly, they could give me results there and then but did say that the radiologist thought it look normal.

Another week or two of waiting and we received a letter to say they believed it was a reactive lymph node and that it could go down over time.

An over all extremely scary time and the relief was unbelievable, I hope this puts some people's minds at ease.

Please don't over Google things, I have two masteres degrees so can churn through academic journals and looking at medical journals I had convinced myself of the worst, so please take time away and trust the process.

    All the best :)

  • Hi its a relief . After how long the lymph node reduced in size or become impalpable ?

  • Thank you so much for your post. I'm waiting for the ENT appointment for my 8 year old daughter who has a large left supraclavicular swelling. This is the first thing I've seen which has given me any hope that it's not something horribly sinister. I'm going to cling to your story and stop googling as I'm driving myself mad with worry.

  • Hi Carrie,

Try not to Google and look this up constantly as it will only end in more worry. It's a difficult and scary experience, not one I'll forget. Looking back I think most of the worry for me came from letting my mind race ahead of what was actually happening at the time.

When I seen the first ENT privately, he almost immediately wrote it off, because she never had unexplained weight loss, excessive night sweats, etc. He said this is probably a node from a wee viral infection that may be swollen for months, that in an otherwise well child, a node, even in that area is not something that concerned him. He said something as simple as a fall on roller skates, we small bump to the head etc can cause a node to pop up.
Obviously being worried I was sure this diagnoses was rushed and I needed a second opinion fast. So when the NHS appointment dropped the first ENT also said in their opinion it was just a reactive node that would take sometime to come down, maybe months. I was still not convinced so asked the ENT for another opinion there and then, she got the most senior specialist to pop in who said the same thing and said he would arrange an ultrasound just to "put my mind at ease" and "put it to bed".

We waited for the scan a few weeks and that was a grim wait, but we went and they couldn't give use results right away, but I asked their opinion and again the radiologist said it looked ok to him but he needed to wait for the the main consultant to look and write us back. The letter never came in within a week so I called snd the specialist said the letter was on its way and that it was good news , I still didn't believe it but a few days later we got the letter saying that they believe this to be a reactive node and it will reduce over the next few months.

It took several weeks for this whole process and I know what your going through, it's really scary. So what I'd say is focus on the positive outcome, stay away from Google as it only made me worse, reading medical journals etc. Trust the process, the doctors do know what they are doing.

If your daughter is otherwise well, with no major symptoms apart from this swelling I would take some comfort from my experience and see that it does happen and in all fairness not one of the doctors apart from my GP were too worried, they said it's pretty common after infections or something that's happened way before for a child to have node that is stubborn and won't settle down, that in some cases may never fully reduce and be sort of scarred without any effect other than it's being a little larger than normal.

I hope your get answers soon and that everything is ok.

    all the best :)

  • Hi Ahmad,

It was swollen for months and never really started to reduce noticeably for a good while, but it never got larger in that time also.

if you read my reply to Carrie below you will see I've detailed the whole process :)

    I hope all is well.
