Unexplained black toenail

I have read through the posts on this website concerning strange looking nails, looked at melanoma pictures of toenails and am none the wiser.

My toenail discolouration (hallus - big toe) started with wearing woolly socks that rubbed on a long day's trek. That evening my toe started itching and within a week, a section of nail discoloured to beige and stripy. Within a month one side of it became brittle - displaying typical fungal infection signs. However, two sample tests through the nhs have been negative. Over a year, the condition spread from just a sliver on one side to covering about 3/4 of the nail. This summer I put some standard nail varnish on (not breathable variety). Recently I removed it, and to my surprise the whole nail has gone dark brown. I am wondering what to do!

  • Hi,

I think I would go back to the GP for further investigation. My husband gets trauma to his big toe nail if he treks long distances in certain shoes. After a long period of discolouration his nail falls off and regrows fine. However yours sounds to be getting worse so I would be inclined to ask for a referral to a dermatologist so a sample can be sent for biopsy. GPs see very few patients with subungal melanoma so they don't always think to refer for tests. Hopefully it will be fine but it needs checking for your peace of mind. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie

  • Thank you for replying Angie. I will make an appt with the GP as you suggest.
