14 years later adnormal cells again

Hi,

I had abnormal cells when i was 20 and these were treated with laser treatment under a GA.  I have had normal smears since and my last showed abnormal cells again and high grade dyskariosis.  I have an appointment at the Colposcopy clinic on the 9th Sept, which I am assuming I will require treatment again.  Has anyone had this a second time?  I'm not sure if this is just pure bad luck or if all the cells the first time weren't removed or i'm more likely to develop cervical cancer because its come back?

I'm not great with smears and these procedures as I get very faint and squeamish and the thought of having treatment again then although its good to be reassure having the smears regularly, being back onto smears 3 monthly, 6 monthly, yearly and the awful waiting for the results (which tend to take 6-8 weeks where I am) is making me extremely anxious.  I have 3 young children and my husband recently had the snip, i'm not sure if requesting a hysterectomy (where they remove the cervix only or the least invasive one) is an option, can I request this to stop the worry of these coming back again and having to go through the same treatment a 3rd time?

  • Hello Laura84,

I am sorry to hear your latest smear showed abnormal cells again and I hope that your appointment at the colposcopy clinic goes well on the 9th. I hope you will hear from others on this forum who have had this happen to them more than once and that they will share their thoughts on this and experience with you.

I am so sorry that all this is making you so anxious as these procedures make you feel faint. It might be worth mentioning all this when you have your appointment on the 9th. They will be able to answer all your questions I am sure and to tell you whether other options might be available to you. You could also ask them whether they know what the likelihood might be of this happening a third time. I hope they will give you further guidance on this. Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm if you feel you'd like to have a chat with them about all this.

I hope all goes well with your appointment and treatment.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Lucie,

Thanks for your reply.  I contacted the hospital previously and explained I was quite anxious having been through this before, they were very helpful and advised to get a prescription from the doctor for something to take on the day of my appointment to relax me, which I did and I have a prescription to collect next week.

I will hopefully be able to get more information from them at my appointment as to options, possibilities in the future.

    Thanks,

    Laura
