Pain in left side of abdomen/back. Help??

Hello all. I am just looking for some advice. The past 2 months I have been experiencing abdominal pain. It started on my left hand side by my belly button, however it radiates through my back and pelvic area. I went to the doctors last month as I have a lot of pain after sex that can last up to 3 days, along with bleeding and a lot of pressure in my pelvic area, I was referred for an ultrasound for which I have not heard anything back. My menstrual cycle this month was extremely heavy for a day but consisted of pure blood clots for the next 3 days along with severe abdominal pain, back pain and a weak feeling in my legs. I know my body and this is not normal for me, so much so that I made an emergency appointment with my go who said that it’s just period pain and I should be taking 3 ibuprofens and drinking lots of water, despite me telling her that painkillers have not been working. I have never had any period pain since I started my cycle and if I have it has been an aching sensation behind my knees that goes with ibuprofen.  I have had a lot of pressure in my colon and pain which is also recent, but I have bled after a no.2 since I can remember. Sorry for all of this info, I was just wondering if anybody else has had anything similar and, if so, what was your outcome?

  • Hello Leah and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about the symptoms that you've been experiencing recently. I take it from your post that you've been referred for an ultrasound but heard anything back as yet. It sounds as though this is a good starting point for trying to find out what may be causing these problems.

Given that you're experiencing some new problems with with your menstrual cycle, in addition to your previous symptoms, I'd encourage you to go back and see a GP in your surgery. You sound as though you're very aware of what's normal and what's not normal for you during your cycle and although you feel that the GP was dismissive last time it's important that these changes are considered. It may be that the GP wants to chase up your ultrasound or arrange other tests or a referral.

If you'd like to chat things through with our team of nurses do give them a call. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes,
