Diagnosed breast cancer but feeling OK - am I odd?

Hello,

Initial diagnosis just RHS breast at stage 2 but grade 3 so having chemo pre surgery, 1st EC on 29th August, awaiting CT, bone scan & biopsy on LHS, results due 21st August.  Had really quick & excellent treatment compared to many plus am a stoic/daft Yorkshire lass who is ready for an adventure (although I can think of better ones!!)

Been looking at the forums more so for practical advice re what to expect re chemo, what I should be doing re diet, questions to ask the cancer team who are supporting me.

Told all family & close friends and set up a whatsapp group so they know what I am doing, so far enjoying this as it’s an opportunity for all to be entertained as well as not having to have the same bl00dy conversation over & over. Definitely decided against face book as they're not close & I know it would be filled with motivational quotes - not what I am after at all.

Hopefully there are some other people out there who are feeling relatively positive, in the meantime am off to Edinburgh fringe this weekend to watch some very odd shows - whoop, whoop!

  • Hi Nel

Glad you're ok, I think about how you are once in a while.  I had my DIEP reconstruction 8th Dec and am doing really well, my 'new' body bits feel very odd and uncomfortable at times but it was very straightforward and recovery going very well...lots of lying down & watching rubbish on TV!  Do miss my cycling and gym though...

Is that your first annual mammogram on 25th? I'm sure you're similar to me when you had diagnosis but my 2nd one is July, anyway hope its all clear.

Hiding in the house is exactly what those idiots in parliament want you to do so well done Nel & little Nel! Hope the home schooling is OK...is your daughter teaching you lots mmm? Ha!

And you had a relationship? crikey a lot happens in a few months, its good that you've tried it even if it doesn't work out if that's what you want.  Like you say you do need someone with whom you have some shared interests and with whom you can have a decent conversation.  Quite difficult at the moment to find love though I reckon, maybe give it another go when the world returns to something like normal eh? You'll be glad to know that the lovely Adrian is being a marvellous slave/butler/go-for (!!) and is ensuring that the house is relatively clean and I don't go hungry (not sure that would ever happen!), his washing up standards are quite poor though...!

Good to hear from you Nel, keep your chin up.

  • Hi Sam

Am so glad you had your Diep was so quick, my surgeon is naughty says I will have an appointment in April to discuss the procedure  which sometimes I feel like just leave how am sure, a bit scared with op.

I tried Sam was just unlucky I found it hard to carry on, will wait a bit for  atleast better than this .hmmmm

Iyes the first mammograms for year 2021 , let's hope things will go well.

I salute Adrian is supper boy forget the quality of work we just appr6the effort of it all, atleast he tries. And also just being there for you emotionally that's incredible, pass my New years greetings for me.

    Good to hear from you.

I wish could see how it looks Sam, did they do anything with the other one? Reduce or reshape to match the new one?

    Have a good night

    Nellie

I am very lucky to have private medical insurance through work which is why it was able to be done so quickly, I wasn't in any great rush to have it done but wanted it done & out of the way quicker than the expected timescales I'd been given for NHS treatment, great you've been given an appointment to discuss as that's a lot speedier than some I know of.

Happy to share some pictures so you can see what it looks like - add me as a friend on your profile section and will sort!

Currently just have the rebuilt (still some tape on) boob that's very pert and the god-given boob that isn't quite so pert (!!) and has been a bit battered by lumpectomy.  Phase 2 will uplift real boob and create nipple on new boob, they wait until things have settled and any swelling has gone so maybe in 6 months or so.  Am really lucky that had the op early winter as there's quite a few at the hospital I was treated at who are now having ops cancelled re covid (NHS & private).

I definitely would recommend the DIEP compared to what I hear re implants, yep longer op but less hassle in the long run and much more natural in the look & feel.

    Send that friend request!

  • Hi Sam

Hope you are healing ok, and enjoying at least some curve back thank God for doctors. Myself still waiting for appointment by the end of march to see what will come up, lol I have built some muscles on belly plenty so I do have more for reconstruction if all go well. Since all these odds my immune system hasn't been very strong enough although Ben healthy no illness but tests show so, still thinking if I loose blood so soon will I be safe? While somtim9am like after chemotherapy it came low but I survived the operation and all of it without any problems.

Am still waiting in the inbox to see how it looks.

Hope Adrian is doing well. Angel is well just playing too much in the house coz of staying home, cant wait for next week back to school. Now I can appreciate teachers doing great job, wasn't easy more especially with time management, coming from night shift and she is waiting for school online eiishi. You end up sleeping only 3 hours.

My mammograms came back negative, thank God, I just try to enjoy today's peace without "what if...." I hate thinking otherwise than am healed ,am well, will hear no more of this monster.

Wish you best week  my friend

    God bless

    Nel xxx

  • Hi Sam

Miss you alot, hope you are doing well down Yorkshire,  we are OK here thankfully. Hope you are healing well and that Adrian is fine.miss hearing from you good friend

God bless and have fabulous weekend

  • Hi Nel
Sorry didn't reply to your previous post, had meant to but totally forgot...I seem to be forgetting quite a lot nowadays!
Are you still due to meet consultant end March for reconstruction discussion, do hope so.  And great news re all clear on mammogram, you must be very pleased with the good boob!
Am betting you & Angel are glad school is back on, good for her to get back & see her pals and learn in the proper environment...and a rest for you too..
Adrian is doing well, he had his covid vaccination at the weekend and has a phobia of needles (and lots of other things) but survived the event without any trauma/arrests/fainting so that was a turn up for the books.
I am fine, back to work now but am sooo tired by 4pm can hardly keep my eyes open, am sleeping too well as well, getting out of bed is a real challenge on a morning.  I also seem to have had a successful change of tablets that suppress oestrogen which am very grateful for as previous ones produced lost of aches & pains, the hot flushes seem more frequent and extreme but I can handle those, not sure I'll feel the same in the height of summer though.  How's work for you now Nel?
Do you still run Nel?  I recall you did when you were first diagnosed, I hope you are still willing & able to do so as quite enjoy my morning runs, helps to have a wood near my house and the fact that I don't mind a bit of mud and rain (its the Yorkshire in me).

I'm planning lots of stuff to do as the lockdown eases, got my haircut already booked (thankfully as look more like Boris Johnson every day) and have signed up for a MacMillan sponsored hike, just 13 miles, with a group of pals in the Yorkshire dales which will be bl00dy marvellous.

My weekend is fun-filled, today is gardening ( I have an out of control Passion flower and rose bush that need pruning...think I'll come off worse) and tomorrow is a long training walk for the hike, as long as there's not too many people around early doors I'll be happy!

Hope you're keeping out of trouble too Nel!

  • Hi Sam

Am so glad to hearing from you and that you are doing good that very praising news. Also that you are back to work.

I have been back to work ,am being furloughed dont know to when as it keeps on changing, according to the letter I have was up to 31-03 but the news talked about furthering it to either end of April and September so fingers crossed.

Yea Angelbis fine and both of us happy to go back to school, hmmm remote Learning wasn't easy at all, this work belongs to teachers not parents, it was a period I appreciated the good work teachers do with kids.

I did have a telephone appointment with the consultant unfortunately its been pushed forward, we will discuss about it in September as of now they are having cancer operation only which is understandable.  I dont mind when while am still working on boosting the immunity.

Happy for Adrian, I too had my first dose on 5th February, waiting for second dose any moment.

I am no longer running but I do indoor exercises.

    Have a good weekend

  • Hi Nel

I hope you're back at work by now and managing ok. If its any consolation on the push back on consultation its taken me over a month so far to get the attention from my plastic surgeons secretary to get a date for the next phase of (minor) stuff, not sure going private has any benefits in this respect over NHS!

I was back at work full time last week but only worked part of the week as had a much needed holiday to go to Yorkshire - which was soooo nice.

Are you making the most of the new found, post lockdown, freedoms?  When up north went for a few meals and it was really nice to be able to do so again.

How were you after your 2nd covid jab?  Not too bad I hope.

Love to you & Angel XX
