Just been diagnosed, BC - triple negative

Hi there,

I joined the group a couple of weeks ago after my scan and biopsy and found it useful and supportive reading what everyone is going through and their advice whilst we all face the C word!

I've now received my diagnosis and plucked up the courage to say 'HI!' :)  I'm still reading up on all the booklets i've received. A strange feeling really counting the days down to your appointment like a holiday without the excited feeling and now coming home with loads of booklets and not holiday brochures.  i feel strange that i have a sense of relief but a strange relief as I do have cancer and not the all clear.  Does anyone else have these mixed feelings?

I've been diagnosed with stage 2, grade 3 and triple negative.  Well from my understanding, i'm waiting for the confirmations to all come in the post.  I remember them saying 18 weeks chemo, 5cm tumour, lymph nodes, masectomy, radiotherapy....

I still feel very detached and like they are talking about someone else as i dont feel ill.  I was hoping to be pregnant :( so feel very sad tonight that is unlikely to happen now with my diagnosis and that i'm 42.

So mixed feelings all around tonight.

  • Hi Mich,

Boobs changing size is a known side effect. It doesn't happen to everyone but I was warned that it was a possibility. It's not that noticeable but I can see it, just another reminder of what I've been through.

    Still, onwards and upwards

  • Hi Ladies hope your all doing well.

Had my last radiotherapy today, so fingers crossed its done the job

The radiographer nurse phoned me yesterday for follow up chat and said the radiotherapy peakes 10-14 days after last treatment and that's normally when the problems, if any arrive, I didn't know that so keep on moisturising, oh and you can feel more fatigued in the 14 days after treatment! . The area is red and itchy, I got 1% hydrocortisone cream from boots today as that apparently stops it itching.

Mitch any news on dates for rads? Hope the stretching is going well, can you get arm up to shoulder level yet? I've noticed I have swelling above sholder bone on front by neck, nurse said this happens after all nodes been removed it should settle down in time, I hope it does, it's hard at moment to know what's "normal" Hope your healing well xx

    Take care everyone xxx

  • Hi ladies

Hope you are all well and coping with the lockdown, sorry i've been quiet lately but i was enjoying the lovely weather in between decorating.

I've spoke to my oncologist today re radiotherapy she said I am going to have them over 5 days but also offered me a booster 5 days as I am under 50, she said i can think about it and confirm if i want the booster when i go for planning, has anyone had the booster?

    Congrats on completing treatment Davia

Sue you must of completed rads now?

Claire hope you're still doing good after your rads

Mich hope you are recovering well after surgery.

    Sending virtual hugs to all

    Linda x

  • Hi Linda, I'm having the booster. So 15 sessions plus a 5 session boost. They just said that's what I would be doing, they didn't offer me a choice. Just waiting for session number 8 now.

Davia, congrats on finishing rads, that's great. Interesting that it peaks 14 days after treatment, I didn't know that. What's next for you? I can't remember if you work?

i also didn't know different size boobs was a thing, great!

    Mich, Sue hope you're ok.

    xx

  • Hi Claire

They said my rads will be 5 days of intense rads and if i want the booster that will be another 5 days, i think i am going to have the booster because as we know tn is aggressive.

Cant believe we are near the end of this roller coaster ride we have been stuck on x

  • Ah ok so only 10 treatments total. Yes, I would definitely go for it.

I know, weird that its ending soon!

  • Hi Linda,

That sounds interesting, so is that 15 rads done over 5 days? Then boosters after that? I didn't have any boosters, had 15 rads, it's not been to bad at all so far, I have been having itchyness in area and nippy is a bit sore but that's it, I put cream on twice a day.

    Claire

I didn't know that the radiotherapy peaks 10-14 days after treatment until speaking to my radiologist at follow up appointment, it can make you feel fatigued to I was hoping my energy would be getting back to normal after chemo, but I'm still puffing when gardening and run out of steam quicker, how are your energy levels?

    Mitch hope your healing well

Sue how's rads going? Have you seen the jelly fish scene on the big TV,

    Keep well ladies xxx

  • Yes oncologist said 2 decades ago they used to give rads over 5 weeks, then years after started doing it over 3, for the last 5 years they have been doing research giving it over 5 days, they were due to roll it out at the end of the year but because of covid they have bought it forward x

  • Hey ladies,

That is interesting about radiotherapy. I still don't know much about it lol! Err no phone call yet either. 4 weeks today since my opp.

Davia I can lift my arm so elbow inkine with shoulder. I feel better as have seen quite a bit of progress now. I still have that pulling sensation but not as bad. It's harder to lift my arm up when my elbow is our and away from my body, guess it pulls more and obviously uses more muscles.

I went to have my port flushed yesterday. Strange to be back at the chemo unit after 8 weeks and obviously due to virus they have made adjustments.

Glad u managed to get the cream Davia. I heard aloe Vera also works well.

Has any of the radio made you feel sick?

    Xxx

  • That's interesting, I suppose with all the new technology they are able to tweak it, up the streanth and reduce the visits, I quite enjoyed the trips every day, something to do and being out in the world

Good luck with yours, when is your mapping appointment? That takes the longest time and your first radiotherapy session, but after that they have it down to a fine art ️

    Take care xxx
