Just been diagnosed, BC - triple negative

Hi there,

I joined the group a couple of weeks ago after my scan and biopsy and found it useful and supportive reading what everyone is going through and their advice whilst we all face the C word!

I've now received my diagnosis and plucked up the courage to say 'HI!' :)  I'm still reading up on all the booklets i've received. A strange feeling really counting the days down to your appointment like a holiday without the excited feeling and now coming home with loads of booklets and not holiday brochures.  i feel strange that i have a sense of relief but a strange relief as I do have cancer and not the all clear.  Does anyone else have these mixed feelings?

I've been diagnosed with stage 2, grade 3 and triple negative.  Well from my understanding, i'm waiting for the confirmations to all come in the post.  I remember them saying 18 weeks chemo, 5cm tumour, lymph nodes, masectomy, radiotherapy....

I still feel very detached and like they are talking about someone else as i dont feel ill.  I was hoping to be pregnant :( so feel very sad tonight that is unlikely to happen now with my diagnosis and that i'm 42.

So mixed feelings all around tonight.

Mich x

  • Hi Mich

I had  the string feeling in my arm to, the surgion said keep stretching it as much as you can to prevent cording, easier said than done when it's painful I also have a tight feeling on upper arm some days, that comes and goes.

Yes I'm having neck done and it's OK, the only thing I've started to get in last two days is itching and redness, I put aloe Vera on and that seems to ease it, they said I could get 1% hydra cortisone cream from boots, but that's not easy as I'm confined to barracks, my hubby isn't going out either as he doesn't want to bring corvid in. But so far so good, off for number 13 now.

Enjoy sunshine and garden, keep well xxx

  • Hi again Mich

Have you got numbness by your elbow and slightly down towards fingers? I've got the numbness under arm, I was expecting that, but I didn't expect it further down

Also have they mentioned breath hold? If your having left side treated you will need to hold breath for 20 seconds max, it's not difficult so don't worry about it

Have they given you a date for mapping?

  • Ladies, sorry again for not being around for a while.  The days seem to be going so quickly but I'm achieving nothing!  Trying to catch up with all the chat now.

Lindylu, congratulations on being BRCA negative, that's amazing, also great news about clear margins.

Sue, so sorry you've been feeling low.  How is radiotherapy going, you must be nearly done?

Mich, sorry, I'm slightly confused, did you have a mastectomy in the end?  Good luck for your appointment next week.  You asked ages ago if I'd had a mastectomy, no I didn't, lumpectomy and 2 lymph nodes removed.  You did make me laugh with your sports bra shennanigans :)

Davia, I'm so sorry that it had spread to more lymph nodes.  Great news that it's all out now but must have been so worrying.  You don't ever need to apologise for not being upliting, we're here to support one another.

I've just finished my first week of radio, it's fine so far.  I haven't had any physio since my surgery, also haven't had any pain although I'm still a bit numb under my arm.  I'm a bit worried now that I haven't been doing any exercises.  I guess I've slightly fallen through the cracks since I moved county mid-treatment.

Hope everyone is coping ok with the lockdown.  I'm living with my parents and as they're both over 70 they've been able to get weekly delivery slots, we're also getting fruit and veg deliveries from a local farm which is handy.  At the moment I'm loving driving into London each day for radiotherapy, the roads are pretty clear and the weather is lovely, it's a couple of hours to myself which I'm enjoying.  Guessing the novelty will wear off in another week or so!

Love to all, enjoy the weekend x

  • Hey Davia,

Thanks, I'll keep on with the stretching. I have numbness down back of my arm but not passed my elbow. I do get a burning sensation down my arm and feeling of pins and needles. It's stinging a bit today but maybe I over did it in the garden so will take it easy tomorrow.

That's odd you have numbness to your fingers. Have u checked with the nurses?

Ah yes I have heard about that, I'm on the left too. Glad it's manageable.

No, haven't heard anything yet. Maybe next week. How many u have left? U must be almost done

Do u have a friend or neighbour that can get the cortisone? I would suggest online but delivery is a bit hit n miss.

    Xx

  • Mich, yes I get pins and needles and what I call spiking, sometimes it spikes so hard I swear at it lol

I only have 2 left, have they told you how many you will have? I will mention the numbness in my lower arm, it not down to fingers but below elbow, the skin feels more sensative to.

Hope you get your date soon for the mapping,

    Keep well

  • Hi Claire

Did you get a leaflet from BCN with excersize on? It opens to a poster,?

I also enjoy driving to have radiotherapy, it's nice to get out, I'm going to miss it, I have my last one on Tuesday.

Food wise, we seem to be eating more, we never had biscuits or cake  in the house before lockdown, now we have both neighbours know know hubby likes wholenut chocolate so they buy him a big one every week, we will need to be jcb'd out of the house when restrictions are lifted

    Keep well,

    Enjoy weekend ladies xxxx

  • Hey Davia,

Ha ha yeah sounds like my arm! At the moment it feels like I've got sunburn! Did u manage with your exercises OK to get your arm up for radiotherapy? Is it the same as your right arm now?

Whoop, that's great just 2 left do u have any side effects? I heard it can make u feel sick?

    Hey Claire,

Glad to hear you managing OK and your radiotherapy is going well. Is your mobility right in your arm? If so I guess u don't need  to do exercises?

I'm a little worried about lymphadema as all lymph nodes taken out and I still have swelling. But heard it can take a while to go down.

Yeah I've been eating loads esp as I enjoy baking. It's weird I've been feeling out of sorts and not really doing much but day flies by! I've started a little to do list to keep me motivated, nothing major just little things I want to achieve each day. I refrained from putting on, clean me teeth lol!

How's your hair growth going ladies? My eyelashes are coming through yay! My hair is growing but very patchy! I've noticed I have lots of fine hairs on my face. Guess I've always had facial hair as I'm fair skin but just weird to see white hairs sprouting everywhere lol!

    Happy weekend to you all

    Xx

  • Hi Mich, I think the excersizes will be a bit more uncomfortable for you as you've had mastectomy, so it will take a bit longer for you to get that arm above head, but it will get there, my arm can do everything my right arm can do but it's weaker than it was, I'm also worried about limphodima, I have a bit of fluid under arm, I can feel it like there's a ball there, and my boob is swollen, they say radiotherapy can cause swelling so I'm hoping it settles in time, I also have slight swelling above shoulder blade where they're doing rads, like you, I've had all lymphs out, you do worry,  and it's not the best time to be getting appointments with limphodima nurses, I've you tubed lymph drainage and found a video, I try to do the excersises to try help drainage, but it's all very early for us and hopefully it will settle in time

Keep stretching, have a nice weekend

  • Hi Ladies,

It's great to hear how you're all getting on. I have had 9 radio's so far and although I don't have any real soreness yet, by right boob has shrunk. It's not the best look!! I am eating my body weight in food and with not excercising, you can only imagine the results.

Claire, I'm a lot brighter now thank you. I was just having a wobble and should know better than to go online wnen I'm having a bad day. How many radio's have you got left.

Davia, you're nearly done with radio, that's great news. One more step to normality if you remeber what that is.

Mich, sorry if you've already said but have you started radiotheraphy yet or if not, have you got a date to start?

My op was on the right so I don't have to worry about holding my breath. I have been using bio oil which is meant to help with the scars. I don't know if it works but it's worth a go.

    Hope you're ok Linda

    Love to all

    Sue xxx

  • Hey ladies,

Thanks for the advice Davia, I'll look at u tube. Yeah really strange time as I have no follow up appointments. Although I will have a prosethic fitting at some point. And just waiting now to hear more about radiotherapy. All I know is I'll have my chest and neck.

I have a seroma too, I've heard it can take a while to go down. So to persevere with the exercises.

Hey Sue, glad to hear u doing OK with your radio. Strange your boob has shrunk. Did they say this can happen? Is there is a big difference are u able to have alterations after treatment?

I still have swelling on my chest so looks like I have an A cup lol!

Yeah I use bio oil, heard its really good for your skin.

    Happy weekend guys!

    Xx
