Cervical polyp

Hi everyone. I've been to the doc this morning after having vague abdominal and lower back ache. It's getting worse, and I'm going to the loo a lot, weeing. She did a swab, said there was a bit of discharge, and a urine sample showed slight signs of something so I've got antibiotics. But she found a polyp so I'm being referred to the hospital. Trying to think it's nothing, but this ache is really annoying. Pretty much constant. Has anybody else had this?

  • Hi there

You won’t be able to ask for a general anaesthetic on arrival I’m afraid-that requires planning-theatre, anaesthetist etc so can’t just happen on your request when you go. I haven’t had a polyp removed myself but when my friend did, she went in as a day case surgery and had this done under general anaesthetic. When you see the gynaecologist, they will tell you what the plan will be so this would be the time to raise your concerns. I hope it all goes well for you.

  • Hi Amy, just wondering how you got on earlier in the year? I have the exact same symptoms- vague pain on and off near belly button, occasional spotting and a cervical polyp. Awaiting gynae appointment at the hospital.

  • Hi I had the polyp removed and checked, it was benign which most of them are I'm told. It had caused some inflammation around my cervix which was causing the discharge I believe. I had an appointment to get those inflammation cells quarterised but they healed in their own once the polyp was removed. As for the pain in my stomach mine was on the left hand side and I still have no answers for it and still have it slightly, I'm hoping it's a hernia that comes and goes so makes it difficult to pick up (4 ultrasounds later) but who knows. As long as it's not sinister I'm just living with it. I hope you get your appointment through soon and some peace of mind x

  • Thanks for the quick reply, glad everything was fine. My pain comes and goes too. My appointment is later today so hoping I'll get some more answers. X

  • Hi Amy,

My polyp symptoms sound very similar to yours. Went to the doctor in April after experiencing between period bleeding with slight pain in abdo, upper legs, lower back and a feeling that something was stuck. GP said it was a prolapsed uterine polyp and referred me. Been waiting 6 months for hospital appt and symptoms only came back last week so now the feeling of something stuck, lower abdo ache and white sticky non smelling discharge is back. I'm just hoping for them to remove it asap and to have my life back as I'm 30 and recently married :(

  • I had a cervical polyp removed 5 days ago.

I found it on self examination after I started spotting between periods, and have also been having low quite severe back pain around the kidney area and below, as well as stabbing pains in the right ovarian region and shooting pain in my thighs.

Also, I have has a constant stitch in my left side that won't go away.

I found a polyp about the size of a marble so immediately diagnosed myself with either cervical or ovarian cancer and went to the A&E dept mainly due to the severe back pain as I though it may be a kidney stone.

The gynae team removed the polyp, I'm still waiting on the results but they said they are fairly confident it is benign but will be up to 6 weeks for the results. I've been told to expect bleeding for 3-4 weeks from the polyp removal. The removal itself took about 1 minute, no anaesthetic is needed usually, all I felt was a tiny sting and then it was over. You really don't need a GA for polyp removal unless it was absolutely massive.

I had a transvaginal ultrasound for the ovaries and uterus, and all seems to be well apart from a 2cm "mature follicle" on my right side which she said looked normal for this point in my cycle, and a CT scan of the kidneys showed no stones.

There is no explanation for the back pain or the stabbing pains I am having in my inner thighs either.

Releived the ovaries look okay as I pretty much have every symptom of ovarian cancer including heartburn, pain, back ache, bloating etc, except from the needing to pee more.

To reassure anyone having a cervical polyp removed, it is painless and quick.
