Head and neck cancer?????

Evening all

First Post, so will try and make it short and sweet!

14weeks ago. I started getting right sided neck pain about 1/2inches down from jaw,. this then escalated into a sore throat and throat pain for 4 weeks. Went to GP, to be told its viral,.

2weeks later awful tightening feeling,  like someone has there hands round my throat, by now I'm also getting twinges of pain on left side. GP still saying virus, but will refer to ENT

6weeks waiting for appointment, in the meantime, jaw pain, tongue pain, and twinges of pain up through my teeth and I've developed a noticeable lump in my throat, so back to the doctors I go, who dismisses it as a fatty lump.

(2012, devoped lump in neck during pregnancy, partial thyroidectomy in Oct 2012, thankfully a pregnancy related goitre)

By now I'm convinced it's serious so finally ENT appointment, had the camera up the nose and so far so good. But now I have to have an MRI for the throat lump

So literally having a heart attack over the thought of being squashed into a confined tube for 30minutes!

Im no super model, like my foodies, so petrified that either won't fit, no room or ill get stuck oh and I get claustrophobic quite easily.

I honestly don't have a clue why an mri when I thought it would an ultrasound, so I'm petrified my fatty lump is not a fatty lump and all my other symptoms are all related to something scary

To date today, my ear pain (both sides intermittenty) has subsided (for now) throat pain seems to be coming back, but I have the most annoying tongue, where it feels as though its too big for my mouth (but it looks normal size) and  strange pains through the middle of the tongue and at the sides

This is seriously stressing me out and is making aniexty a lot worse. Any REASSURING advice out there please??

  • Hi Mummy73,

Sorry to hear that you've been having these health problems for a while now. I'm sure it's not been an easy time for you.

It sounds like the ENT team are being very thorough in checking out your symptoms which is great. The MRI will allow them to see and assess this lump in far more detail than an ultrasound would and depending on where the lump is it may not physically be possible to ultrasound the lump.

I'm sure that the staff in the MRI department are used to dealing with patients who have concerns and anxieties around the actual scan. I'd imagine that it's fairly common for people to feel somewhat uncomfortable. It may be worth giving the department a call before the day just to let them know that you are concerned. They may be able to offer some advice before you visit. Alternatively you could give our team of nurses a call and chat things through with them. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that you don't have to wait too long for your appointment.

    Best wishes,
