Recall from first mammogram

hi.  I’ve had a recall for more screening and tests after my first ever mammogram. To say the least I have the smallest boobs ever so if there was a lump I think  Id have found it. I’m stressing out somewhat. I can’t make the appointment next Thursday so have got to wait till the week after. Any help in dealing with the wait and what’s likely to  happen would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Hi Greatmama and welcome to the forum.

I just wanted to put you in touch with one of lovely regulars [@Chriss]‍ as she has had many callbacks over the years so hopefully she will be able to put your mind at ease a bit about what's to come whilst you wait for your next appointment.

The waiting is always tough but I hope knowing you're not alone makes this time slightly easier to bear.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi greatmama

a recall can be frightening, at my recall there were 26 other women there that had also been recalled. Out of the 26, three of us went on to have biopsies, so the odds are in your favour. There are obviously a number of reasons for recall, most of them when I was there was that the initial mammogram was difficult to read, perhaps this could be what’s happened in your case due to the size of your boobs and perhaps they want to do an ultrasound instead so they can be 100% certain you’re in the clear. My advice is don’t think the worse, a recall does not mean you have cancer and try and keep busy until your next appointment. Best of luck x

  • Hi there ...

Yea I have lumpy boobs , or did have ... and on each call back from a mamorgramme I thought the worse ..I panicked each time as no one told me the odds were 8.5 out of ten lumps are benign... and one lump was like a hard round pebble ... i was positive that must be cancer ... but each of those 4 times i was o.k ..

If I could go back in time the advice I'd give myself would be don't panic till you know .. coz panic won't change the outcome ..  so fingers crossed you'll be fine ... let us know how you go ...

  • Thank you! I’m trying to keep busy and not think the worse - sometimes it’s working! Will let you know the out come x

  • Thank you x  will keep you posted

  • You’re welcome, hopefully everything will turn out fine x

  • Well today was the day. They’d found micro calcification on my left side so I had to have  more mammograms, ultrasound  and biopsies. They said it’s not urgent which is good but they said can’t be sure whether it’s my normal, pre cancerous or cancer. So another week of waiting begins.

  • Hi greatmamna

thanks for the update. Calcifications can indeed be normal, think about 40% of women have them but even if it comes back as DCIS it could come back as low grade, which would still be good news as there are non surgical options. Mine was high grade, I was taking no chances and had them removed. Fingers crossed they come back as normal for you x
