Hi everyone , I have some concerns...

Hi all and thanks for the add .

I went for a pelvic ultrasound this morning and the doctor has referred me for an urgent biopsy, probably under GA in  next two weeks.I have been having some pain and significant nausea, and had a period after several years with nothing (which I put down the fact I still had an old Mirena coil in ) also had a UTI that I think was the cause, and also have been diagnosed with gallstones( it’s been a bit of a year!).The doctor did try and do the biopsy when I was at the hospital but the pain was literally unbearable ( I’m normally fairly stoic), so am now booked in , I have the option of sedation or GA.What I’m wondering is if anyone has had something similar, and also is the sedation effective if the pain is so bad it makes you scream ?Would rather avoid GA partially because I’m self employed ,but also because I have the gallstone op possibly in next few weeks so it doesn’t seem like a good plan to have them close together .Normally I’m really healthy and before this year have only ever seen the Medical profession for the odd broken bone and routine contraception (I’m in my 50s now,and normally fit and healthy)

  • Hello [@Fiveelementgirl]‍

I'm sorry to hear about the health problems that you've been dealing with. It sounds as if you've been dealing with quite a bit recently.

It's often difficult to know what to do for the best when we're presented with a choice. Presumably you'll be asked to let the Consultant know on the day if you're choosing to opt for sedation or a GA. It would be worth writing down all your questions beforehand so that you can ask the team when you arrive.  I'm not sure if you specifically mentioned to the Dr who has requested this biopsy about your planned gallbladder op but if you didn't it may be that they weren't aware at the time you discussed the biopsy.

If you'd like to have a chat with one of our team of nurses about your concerns then do give them a call. They may be able to give you some information.

I hope that you don't have to wait too long for your appointment and that things go smoothly.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn

It does feel like rather a lot of stuff tbh. A good friend yesterday said the best thing was to deal with each thing as it comes up and not panic about things so much.I went for the Pre op today , and the nurse I saw has said that I will need to have GA as they are doing a hysterescopy, and also that my GB operation will need to be put off as it is too close to the biopsy ....so the plan for now is op next week, and then GB at end of October (so long as it doesnt try and do anything exciting in the meantime ) ..

    Thanks Jenn , it's nice to have a reply ; )

  • This is on competely different scale of course but I requested sedation for an endoscopy as  II said i wouldn't contemplate it just using a local. I was surprised that I felt and saw nothing. Just woke and it was over. Also had sedation for a skin flap surgery for malignant melanoma 2 years ago and didnt feel or remember any pain. However I'm having a liver biopsy tomorrow and they don't offer sedation or GA for this so I'm dreading having nothing. Good luck.x

  • I'm glad that the pre-op appointment went well. You sound much more relaxed about things in your post today.

Good luck for the op next week. Do pop back and let us know how you've gotten on when you feel up to it.

    Best wishes

  • Thanks Jenn, I am trying to be relaxed although as it’s the night before now that’s less easy. They are doing an EAE, a hysteroscopy, and a biopsy so definitely will be thorough and hoping I am not too sore afterwards ( I am still a bit ouchy from where they tried to do it without anaesthetic last week ) ...will post afterwards and let you know, hopefully good stuff to report !
