Post Lobectomy Issues

Had a right middle lobectomy on april 25th, after a tumour was incidentally picked up on heart angio scan. Having a really tough time with these issues:

Constant coughing - dry and deep

Vomiting - The violent coughing causes me to regurgitate liquid or food. Queasiness and feeling very full at the base of my throat, even after tiny amounts of consumed food or drink

Breathing - Cannot breathe deep without pain and tightness in my chest. I simply can’t go beyond a certain point. The ribs also hurt. My breath is often fast and shallow

Pain in my chest area and right side caused by any bending, lying any way other than on my back, excessive sitting, walking, or lifting. I also get pins and needles, soreness and extreme tenderness around the chest and right area

Nobody really told me what to expect other than dose up on pain killers - but I certainly dodn’t expect this lot!

Anybody with thoughts or advice much appreciated. My wife’s been an absolute rock but it’s a tough time. Not that long ago, I was a fit, healthy guy, working in the city. That seems a distant memory now. I’ve had to deal with this, my dad dieing and knee surgery - all within a year.

Tough times...

  • Hello GURGS300,

Poor you it sounds like you are really having a tough time of it all. I am glad your wife has been fantastic support for you during these difficult times and I hope that you recover quickly. Hopefully it won't be long now before you bounce back and can resume your usual activities. What a year you've had though! I am sorry to hear you also had knee surgery and that your dad passed away.

I think the best thing to do in your situation is to give your doctor or medical team a call and tell them that these symptoms are causing you a lot of trouble at the moment. I am sure they will have some suggestions to help you deal with the nausea you are experiencing. Make sure you mention too the breathing difficulties and chest pains you describe. They will be in the best position to tell you whether this is something to be expected following your surgery and whether there is anything else they can offer to help you feel better.

If you want to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses, don't hesitate to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope things settle down for you soon and that these tough times will soon be behind you. We're all here for you anytime you need to chat to others who understand what you are going through at the moment. I hope you will hear from some of our members who have also been in a similar situation before.

    Best wishes,
