Is a 6 week wait for CT scan normal?

Hi, I'm new here and could do with some advise please.

I had breast cancer in January 2017 which resulted in a mastectomy. Only 6 months later I had a recurrence in my chest wall on the same side and had the tumour removed followed by radiotherapy.

I have just been to my GP as I have had a cough for the past three months and feeling breathless and tired. I went straight for a chest xray that day and he phoned a week later to say that there is a shadow on my lung and he would refer me for a CT scan.

I have just received my appointment and it is in 6 weeks time. I'm concerned that it is a long time to wait especially with my history and just wondered if anyone else has had to wait this long?

I've never had to wait that long with any previous CT or PET scans.

I am 56 years old and also have the BRAC2 gene.

Any replies would be gratefully received as I'm understandably quite anxious.

Many thanks in advance.

  • Hi,  If your GP is quering another cancer then a 6 week wait is way too long.  There is s two week pathway for Cancer that has to be dealt with .  I would speak to your GP again and ask him to rush this through.  My sister in law had a cough for over 3 weeks  and her x-ray showed a shadow on her lungs. .  She would have only had a three week wait for a NHS scan here in the North East of England.  She opted to have the scan done private as her anxiety was through the roof..  It was done within the week and all was ok. I hope you get sorted and all is well.

  • Thank you Tempest1, I think I will phone the surgery tomorrow and see what they say.

I'm glad your sister in law had a good outcome.
