Breast cancer

Hi, i am new to all of this! I had a lumpectomy 2 months ago which successfully removed the cancer cells. I am due to start radiotherapy next week and am a bit nervous about the side effects. I have an 11 year old son and we are coming up to the end of his primary school days, I don’t want to miss out on his final days of presentations etc. Any advice on what to expect in the first couple of weeks of radiotherapy?

  • Hi Talkybop and welcome to Cancer Chat.

We have a list of side effects that you may experience from the radiotherapy just here but I'm sure some of our breast cancer ladies who have had radiotherapy as part of their treatment will share their experiences and advice with you soon.

Our cancer nurses are available for a chat on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m so do give them a call if you'd like to discuss this with them as well.

I hope your radiotherapy goes well and wish your son all the best with his last days at primary school.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Talkybop

i had radiotherapy as part of my treatment. Just finished in January this year. I found it very easy, if not a little tedious going everyday for a couple of minutes of radiation. I had no side effects the first two weeks but the last week saw my skin drying and becoming itchy. I was prescribed zerobase and a steroid cream which worked a treat. It’s very doable and nothing to worry about.

  • Hi I had radiotherapy for bc and finished the beginning of June. Had no side effects until about 10 days after treatment finished. I have an inverted nipple due to my tumor being under the nipple so it was drawn in . This became infected but course of antibiotics and all cleared up. I worked all through my treatment and although a little tired near the end it was fine, I have an 8 year old so know how you feel. You’ve got this . Big hugs nicky xxx
