Mouth sores post smoking cessation

Hi, my name is Stephen a retired pharmacist and a smoking quitter for 18 months.
I used to get sore spots and ulcers regularly after stooping cigarettes.
My son told me about nicotine replacement lozenges or gum which has to be taken every day but certainly made the ulcers go in time.
On holiday in Switzerland I could not buy the lozenges and was in pain over lunch.
The salad came with olive oil and wine vinegar, and when I tried the salad with the wine vinegar, my mouth smarted, but the pain went away as did the sores.

I do not know if wine or balsamic vinegar will help with mouth sores in cancer treatment, but it is not harmful or expensive and worth a try.

Wine or balsamic vinegar has a very bitter taste, but cured my sores for good. I take the vinegar twice a week as it gives you a nice energy lift and at first sight of any soreness of the tongue or mouth lining. but this is the only real help I have found.

I rinse the mouth with about 5ml of the vinegar then swallow ( you could spit it out if preferred)
Hope this helps! It would be nice to hear of anyone who tries  wine vinegar for mouth sores.

  • Well done for giving up Smoking. I smoked like a Chimney for 40 years and decided to go onto E-cigs, I then cut the nicotine out after 2 years but continued because I liked the taste. I stopped Vaping last March and have been OK and have not missed it. I never had sores or anything after I quit the Cigs though. Anyhow welcome to the rooms I only joined a couple of days ago myself.

  • Thank you too!

There are different types of smokers and I was very addictive having to have one at around 4am and first thing in the morning.

I tried three times to quit , once for 6 months, but the mouth sores were too much and I tried all the mouth ulcer treatments to no avail.

I stopped this time for 18 months after my son told me about using nicotine replacement treatments, and the lozengers kept the sores at bay but they still reocurred.

So on holiday recently in Switzerland, non of the pharmacies stocked to lozengers, just gum which did not work very well on my sore mouth. My friend ordered lunch of salad and a type of ham and two dressings of virgin olive oil and balsamic vineger.

The vinegar on the salad smarted a little in my mouth but miraculosly stopped the mouth soreness.

My friend had some home made red wine vinegar and I used this in small quantities as a mouth wash and indeed the sores stopped hurting immediately.

I hope this helps someone else with mouth ulcers or sore spots on the tongue.

If the tongue is badly  fissured then this treatment may be too severe or painful, however this is a salad dressing, so worth a try.
