HPV smear results

Hi

Just had my smear results through and I have grown abnormal cells and tested positive for HPV infection. I have had previously negative smears and I have been with my husband for nearly 15 years. How would I have got this HPV infection?

Any advice welcome!!

  • Hi

Try not to stress over the HPV aspect of your diagnosis.  I've only got a layman's understanding but from what I've been told HPV is an umbrella term for a large group of viruses - some are harmless, some cause cold sores, some cause things like genital warts or herpes, some can cause cancer.  The majority of the population will contract HPV without ever knowing about it and their immune systems will deal with the virus and clear it within a couple of years.  However, for some the effect of having had HPV will be that it causes changes within cells which can lead to cancer.  These changes can take decades to happen, so during that time the HPV is undected and effectively laying dormant.

My husband has base of tongue cancer, caused by HPV and we've been together for over 30 years.  He's just completed his treatment (six weeks of chemo radiotherapy) with the hospital aiming for a complete cure.  We won't know for about three months how successful it's been.

The good news is that cancer caused by HPV usually responds, by all accounts, better to treatment than HPV-negative cancer.

The HPV vaccination has been given at school to girls for a few years now, and is also about to be rolled out to boys of the same age.  Hopefully, cervical and head/neck cancers will decrease as a result.

Good luck with whatever treatment you have.

You could have contracted the virus years ago, and up till now it’s not caused any problems because it’s been dormant. Thousands of people will have hpv and never know anything about it - it is passed through direct genital contact and is very common. If your immune system cannot fight it off it can cause abnormal cells to develop, but these can be treated. It’s no reflection on fidelity in a long term relationship-and there are currently no tests for men. xx
