Waiting for GP appt

Hi, my husband noticed an oval brown mole about 1.5cm on his forehead near the hairline just a week ago.  He went to the practice nurse today for a blood test and mentioned it to  her. She said he should see the doctor but it needed to be one who was able to do a specific test (she didn't say what, but maybe guessing it might be a biopsy); the next available appointment is end July - 6 weeks away.  Should he be waiting that amount of time? I'm concerned he should be seen earlier or maybe ask to be referred to a hospital Dermatologist. Any advice please.

  • Hello!

I recently went to my GP with a suspicious mole. I was referred to the skin clinic at my local hospital and my appointment is a week and a half since my GP appointment I think they “aim” to have you seen in 2 weeks as I believe the actual biopsy results can take a few weeks to come through (it they do one).

If I was to prebook an appointment at my GP it would take about 6 weeks however I can call when they open and usually get an appointment on the day is this something your GP surgery do?

If he is concerned about the mole then I would urge him to get soon as soon as possible. X

  • Hi,

Ok, some GP surgeries have a GP who specialises in dermatology and they have been trained to look at any suspect mole with a dermascope to see if there are any cancerous cells. Those positive for such cells then get referred to dermatology at the hospital. If I was in your husband's position I would contact the surgery and ask for a call back from the GP concerned. Explain that the long wait for an appointment with them would cause you stress and upset and ask if another GP can look at the mole and refer you if there is any doubt as to malignancy. If they prevaricate quote NICE guidelines on waiting times for suspected cancer (just look on the NICE website). Good luck, I hope it turns out to be fine. Please let us know how you get on.

  • Thank you. I have taken a photo of the mole and will email the surgery tomorrow with it asking for an earlier appt.
