Stage 4 father with colon liver mets

Anybody else who has a father going though the battle of cancer?

I still cannot believe the colon cancer in now in his liver.

He had what appeared to a successful treatment of radiation and chemo where his tumour in the lower rectum disappeared.

His bowel resection was put on hold as his biopsies were coming back as normal.

In March 2019 he got a bowel resection as there was a suspicion clump of tissue seemingly growing. During this operation a cyst was spotted on his liver. Devastating and surreal. Right now we know in April he had 6 spots on the liver. He had a very very tough few weeks post operation which turned out to be absolutely complicated.

Waiting to begin chemo on the 28th of June. Da is resting on the couch every day, I've tried to be there and reassure him, make him comfortable, I just cannot believe in like a year all of this has gotten to this point in time. Never in a million years would I think this was on the cards.

How do support your father or family member?

How are ye guys coping with it all?

  • hi, my mum has bowel cancer stage 4 spread to liver, peritoneum and appendix. It is the most heartbreaking thing I have ever encountered.

My mum went through many tests and they all came back fine including the stool test.

Im sorry I don’t have any comforting words, I am so annoyed at a lot of life as I’m sure you are.

To answer your question, as an only child, all I have done to support my mum, is be there every step of the way offer if she needs me, wants me and text her every morning to make sure she’s ok (and sometimes she’s not). Chemo (in my opinion) is the devil we don’t want. But I appreciate the place it has in society.

Happy to talk if you want to pm.

  • Hi Rebecca,

Thank you for your reply, I am extremely sorry to hear about your lovely mother.

My father was in to the Doctors for chronic tiredness and haemorrhoids since 2017, I'm frustrated his Doctor didn't send him for a simply colonoscopy.  It didn't have to get this far.The screenings are definitely not accurate as my father's test were sent off and given the all clear too.

You are an only child, your Mum is very lucky to have you. I have 3 sisters and a brother, it's mainly the 2 other sisters and myself that are around though.

It's heartbreakingly surreal in that you go through this rollercoaster motion but you don't fully get a chance to allow yourself to process it as it is just a speeding thread mill of trying to keep on top of helping your loved one really. Yesterday we spent 11 hours in A&E with suspected clots. My poor da was expected to wait 6-8 hours in A&E and the poor divil collapsed, then he was swiftly seen. Which annoyed me greatly.

Is your Mum currently going through chemo? May I ask what type of chemo your Mum is on. We start the chemo next week for Da.

I tried to PM you but I didn't know how to!
