Anal cancer - symptoms

Hi everyone,

hope you don’t mind me asking if anyone has experience of anal cancer and it’s symptoms. I haven’t got any bowel irregularity but I can feel, what I can only describe as a mass, in my anus. I was recently at the trampoline park with my children and when I was bouncing I could feel something there that was painful and gave me the sensation of needing the toilet. I’d assumed it was just piles and have ignored it.

I know I shouldn’t be embarrassed to seek help but I’m frightened to mention it to the doctor,

thank you

  • Hi Jane.

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having some concerns about your health. It understandable that you feel as you do but seeing your GP is the only way to find out what is causing you this problem.

If you feel concerned about the appointment is there someone that you could consider taking along with you for support? Or maybe there is a nurse at the practice that you would feel more comfortable speaking to ahead of going to see the Dr.

You could also make an appointment to see the GP and take a written list of your symptoms along with you if you'd find it easier to give that to them rather than voice your concerns. We've got some information on our website here that you might find helpful to have a look at ahead of going to see your GP.

Try not to be embarrassed Jane. What you tell your GP is confidential. Doctors are used to discussing intimate problems and will try to put you at ease.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
