Skin Graft - Laser treatment to improve colour

Hi

I had a BCC removed from my nose in January and had a skin graft to repair the 3cm x 3cm that was removed. The graft has improved so much over the 4 months since. Today I had an appointment with an NHS Plastic Surgeon to suggest the next steps to try and improve the appearance of the graft. The colour match is not great - the graft was taken from my collarbone area.

They have suggested laser therapy as a first step but unfortunately, this is not available on the NHS. I wondered if anyone has any experience of this and what the costs might be?

Many thanks.

  • Welcome to the Cancer Chat forum Jen.

I'm sorry that the first step of your suggested treatment isn't available on the NHS but hopefully some of our members who have had laser therapy will pop by to share their advice and experiences with you soon.

You can also give our cancer nurses a call about this next week on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope you're able to find the information you're looking for and wish you all the best with getting this done.

    Kind regards,

  • Did anyone ever reply to this post?

    Thanks

  • Hi Sammies,

Unfortunately it looks like no-one with experience of laser therapy was around at the time Jen made her post but fingers crossed she will return to let you know how she got on.

Both of our posts on this discussion may encourage others who are now on this journey to pop by and share their experiences as well but if you'd prefer to start your own discussion about this, you can find out how just here.

    All the best,

  • Hi Sammies

Unfortunately, I didn't get any replies. I did manage to get an appointment at the Hospital but it was a bit of a waste of time. After the appointment which was very quick and without much information, I received a letter saying they wouldn't even think about doing any laser treatment until after 2 years (it was only a year later so not sure why they gave me the appointment). To be honest I don't think I could face any more treatment now. And after 2 years the colour is a lot better and is more white than brown now. Of course, I am not entirely happy with it but everyone tells me it's hardly noticeable now.

Not sure if that helps you at all :)

    Best wishes

    Jen

  • Hi Jen

I did try through a Hospital in London to get help with colouring my graft which is on my cheek. To be honest it was more draing than dealing with them than the skin graft, and I went my own way eventually. The colour of my graft is a very pale white which looks prominent on the reddish complection. I have tried cosmetic tattooing whic works to a degree but needs to be repeated or topped up every year.

It does help to hear of other people who go throught the same proceedure.

    Regards

    Sam
