Mastectomy

I’m 28 years old and I carry the cancer gene. I was told that I would have to have mri scans yearly from the age of 30. I recently got a letter to go for my first mri two years earlier than planned. They found 3 lumps in my right breast they were tested and I’m all clear. But it was around 3 weeks from the scan to waiting for results. I couldnt hardly sleep and I even got really ill. I’m thinking of having a double mastectomy as I’ve been told I have 50-80% chance. I have two children and I feel that I’m ready to go further as I don’t want it to effect my life constantly thinking about it. I was wondering if anyone could me me some more information. I can look around websites but feel I could get better advice from here.

  • Hi there ...

Oh my, the good news is there's a way of knowing now the chance of getting it .. but the dilema is your so young ... but I can understand your thoughts ..

Try to find out about Angelina Jolie ... she had a double masectomy .. and I've heard of a few others not so well known have it ... from what I know they can reconstruct the boobs .. I'm not sure if they save the nipple though ... though I've herd some have a nipple tattoo ...

I can so understand when you have young ones ... I've had a total right masectomy ... there was very little pain from it .. and I was really scared to look at the scar .. but when I did, l felt nothing really .. now I think it's a small price to pay to still be here... but I was 63 when I had mine... so that probly made it much easier  ....

Do your homework , decide if it's for you .. then tell them what you want .. it's your life .. but know it's still not easy when your young psychologically ... you may need councilling....

What an amazing woman you are .. and whatever you decide , good luck ... Chrissie xx

  • thank you for replying I’m meeting up with my consultant soon to discuss options but I’m more towards having this done. I feel that I need to get them removed so that my life would be easier as I could just be waiting for cancer to happen.

I have a lot of family support and a lot of them agree with my choice.

i defiantly need to do more research before I make it final

    thank you again

  • Hey - I’m 32 and recently had a right skin sparinv mastectomy - I had an immediate temporary reconstruction (an implant) my opp was the 10th April and I’m totally normal again and my boob is pretty much all healed so it’s really not a bad operation in my opinion - no where near as bad as you would think - my opp was the Wednesday and I was walking around on the Thursday

these days there is so many great reconstruction options - I’m your case you will Be able to keep your skin and Nipple so the results are great

the choice is yours and It’s a tough dessicion to make but I never had the choice and had I have known cancer was a possibility in advance I can honestly say I would have chose mastectomy now that I’m going through treatment as it’s the follow up treatment to cancer that is the most scary (in my optionion) chemo, radiotherapy, hormone therapy etc - I would rather eliminate the risk.
