8cm Complex Ovarian Cyst - Advice

Hi

I am new to this forum but wanted to get some advice.  I ended up in A&E recently with lower pelvic pain causing me to vomit several times (had to leave my car at work and get my boss to drive me in).  To cut a long story short I recognised the pain as ovarian cyst pain having had an issue around 7 years ago - had xray and bloods taken given lots of painkillers and eventually sent home around 10 hours later to await an appointment for ultrasound.  The letter came and date was 3 weeks time so I decided to get a private scan in the meantime which showed a complex cyst around 6cm with septations.  Finally had my NHS scan 23rd March and they decided the cyst was 8cm x 6cm by 7cm and also has a solid looking area which wasnt shown on the private scan.  1st April I had a consultants appointment, they decided I needed keyhole surgery urgently due to the size - found out a week later that hospital is so overrun that July is the soonest urgent keyhole surgery can take place.  I had some bloods done before Easter which I just got the results from nearly 2 x weeks later and the CA125 is showing up at 36 which I know is not high but above the norm by 1 point.  I have suggested to my GP that we test again in a few weeks to see if there is a rise?

I have been caught between the hospital and the GP with neither talking to each other - havent really gone into it but I have had to make 100's of phone calls chasing progress and making sure the hospital is updating the GP.  I seem to be the only person concerned with my own well being as the consultants registrar has labelled the blood results as all fine - am I mad to suggest a retest here?

I also found out recently that my maternal Grandma 26 years ago took part in the CA125 trials and as a result had a complete hysterectomy but doesnt know what the outcome was of the test only that some women in the trial went on to have chemo she did not though - does this potentially put me at a slighly higher risk?  I told my GP's PA this morning as no-one has even asked me about my family history and she asked if I was concerned that I might have cancer then?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

  • Hello mumoftwo34,

Thank you for sharing your story. I noticed you have received a helpful reply from Nurse Wanda on this thread which I hope has given you a little reassurance.

Regarding your family history, I think it would not hurt to mention your grandmother's story to your GP or to your consultant and to ask them what they think.

We've had a great number of posts on our forum recently on complex ovarian cysts. If you type 'complex ovarian cyst' in our forum search which is located on the blue banner at the top, you will be able to find other threads which might be relevant to you. For example, [@JoyV0611]‍  recently shared her 7 cm ovarian cyst story here and I thought I would also mention this thread by [@foreignpixie]‍ which you might find an interesting read. Feel free to respond to any that you would like to engage with.

You're definitely not alone and I hope you'll hear from some of our lovely ladies here who have had a similar experience.

    Best wishes,

  • Ovarian cysts can cause an increase to CA125 levels. A simple ultrasound scan, which you've already had, would show up ovarian cancer. If the hospital suspected anything sinister, you wouldn't be waiting until July for surgery, you'd be fast tracked. You'd also be booked in for a two week wait CT scan. Easy for me to say, but stop panicking. Good luck x
