Bleeding after lumpectomy

Hi

I had a lumpectomy on 9th April and saw my consultant on Thursday who confirmed the surgery got all of the cancer - obviously over the moon. However on Wednesday we had to make an emergency trip to the hospital because I suddenly started bleeding heavily from the wound. I was really badly bruised after the op and was told this is actually dead blood (ie connected with the bruising) and this makes sense because the bruising is definitely reducing. My consultant wasn’t concerned about any of this when I saw him and said it will gradually reduce. Two days later I’m still losing what seems to be a lot of blood (ie had to change the sheets when I woke up this morning).

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? The way it’s been explained makes sense and I’m sure it’s fine but I feel worse now than I did straight after the op.

Thank you

  • Hi Gollybean and welcome to Cancer Chat although I'm sorry for what's happened and the reason you're posting.

Hopefully some of our members who have something similar happen during their recovery from a lumpectomy will share their advice and experiences with you soon but you're more than welcome to talk this over with our cancer nurses on 0808 800 4040. Their lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

If the bleeding continues to get worse or you're still worried don't be afraid of going back to the hospital or seeing your consultant again as they are there to help you during this important time.

Sending best wishes and recovery vibes your way Gollybean.

    Kind regards,
