Hoping for the best, fearing the worst!

Hi,

Total newbie here!

After 7 weeks of symptoms (painful nodes in left and one in right top of windpipe which I notice when swallowing food, intermittent pain in armpits, stiff left side of neck, fatigue and now, night sweats), I am seeing an ENT specialist tomorrow late afternoon.

Like a fool, I’ve resorted to Dr Google, and this has made sleeping a bit of a challenge (along with the night sweats that began a couple of days ago).

I was wondering if there would be obvious signs that a cancer has spread beyond the neck (I know I might be lucky enough to have some full-on infection, but I’m trying to prepare myself for bad news)?

Thanks in advance for any guidance or stories from people with similar symptoms.

All the best to everyone on here.

Dave

  • Morning!

    49 going on 79.

I suspected you were a youngster and it was a daft question, forgive me - just clutching at straws really.

Maybe you could ask to be referred by your GP to an ENT specialist for a proper check over. At the very least, it could put your mind at rest. I underwent a nasal endoscopy (not particularly painful but not fun either), then a neck ultrasound - the latter confirming the nodes were solely reacting to infection. But this was what my particular case was believed to require, and yours might not warrant those investigations.

  • I also keep getting a rash that comes and goes on my stomach. Last night it was at its worse, my whole stomach and up to my chest had a rash. Its mostly gone this morning. I also went 2 days with no temp and I was hoping so much it was gone but it went up again in the middle of the night. I feel so disheartened :(

  • Sounds like a strange ailment this. I trust the skin turns white if you press against the rash? As a parent, you’ll know where I’m coming from!

See your GP and mention this new symptom, it might be heat related, but worth getting it checked.

  • I was wondering could it be heat related but I've never had a heat rash before. I've booked a phonecall with my doctor as she is working this morning then wont be in again until next wednesday. Getting pretty anxious again. I'll let you know what she says

  • Good luck, hopefully he/she’ll put you at ease

  • The doctor phoned me. She said the rash is probably a heat rash. She knows I'm not going to settle without this being investigated so she is referring me to heamatology. She said I should be seen in the next month. Dont know if that means she hasnt put it through as urgent. I wish I'd asked her more questions!

  • Heat rash was my hunch too, but at least you’ve been referred, so there is potentially an answer on the near horizon. I don’t think that’s an urgent referral, so your GP clearly sees no immediate reason for concern.

  • I dont know what to think about it all. The fact she went straight to heamotology might mean something too though? I dunno, its just gunna be hard not to worry in the meantime.

    How are you doing?

  • Try to switch off from it (easier said than done I know).

My cough is as strong as ever and the scarring on the lung shown on the x-ray could be quite serious if it’s the beginning of IPF.......which has a poor prognosis. I’m just waiting impatiently for my scan date now. Just hoping it turns out to be scarring caused by a viral infection and isn’t going to worsen over time. Non-smoker all my life and yet I sound like a 40-a-day dude!

  • What were you told about the scarring on your lung? Im sure it could be from previous infections. Thats pretty common! The constant cough and throat clearing must be frustrating though!

Ive just realised this thread is in the "introduce yourself" section, I thought it was in the "waiting on a diagnosis". Im sure those who have diagnosis dont wanna hear my whining! Anxiety sucks though, when it gets a grip of me I find it nearly impossible to be rational! I actually ended up googling again this evening and dragging myself down again. I wish I could stop myself, it does no good at all!
