Hoping for the best, fearing the worst!

Hi,

Total newbie here!

After 7 weeks of symptoms (painful nodes in left and one in right top of windpipe which I notice when swallowing food, intermittent pain in armpits, stiff left side of neck, fatigue and now, night sweats), I am seeing an ENT specialist tomorrow late afternoon.

Like a fool, I’ve resorted to Dr Google, and this has made sleeping a bit of a challenge (along with the night sweats that began a couple of days ago).

I was wondering if there would be obvious signs that a cancer has spread beyond the neck (I know I might be lucky enough to have some full-on infection, but I’m trying to prepare myself for bad news)?

Thanks in advance for any guidance or stories from people with similar symptoms.

All the best to everyone on here.

Dave

  • I know what you mean wrt googling. Mind you, knowing the potential nasties when dealing with GPs can help ensure you get properly checked out and that nothing is overlooked. They have to be a jack of all trades and I reckon an informed patient can be as much a help as a hindrance.

My symptoms were dominated by the inflamed nodes (synonymous with infection), but I also got sinus pressure (noticeably a pressure on the bridge of my nose) and eye floaters. Then came balance issues and a chronic headache. As I said, 2019 has not been much fun so far.

I think you will need to wait it out I’m afraid. If it’s any consolation, my GP said that we are often fighting viruses and they do not always manifest in symptoms. Fingers crossed you get back to normal soon........my night sweats faded away pretty quickly after a few weeks of suffering.

  • Can I ask how long your fevers went on for?

Yeh I do need to wait it out, I need to learn to not panic in that time. I agree about knowledge being helpful, but its maybe not true for me, I am heavily medicated because my health anxiety is so chronic. Im gunna stick to this site with you lovely people who understand and try and stay off google at least :)

  • Probably a good strategy in your case. Anxiety can actually make things worse and prolong your illness as your immune system probably takes a hit as a result. Waiting for my brain CT and MRI results was a worrying time.......that was major anxiety for me (exacerbated by the fact that I was, by then, very clued up on brain ours!).

It’s a bit of a blur given what’s gone on this year, but I think the fever lasted 5-6 weeks, although I now have a second bout of mild fever but without night sweats per sé.

One thing that this year has taught me is that I need to rethink my diet and exercise regime. Having a desk job is probably going some way to making me a shadow of my former self.......an ever widening shadow!!

  • What symptoms do you have at the minute then? Did the balance issues and headaches resolve? You have had a rough time with so many different things going on! Im glad the night sweats have resolved. I hope your other issues do to!

Yes I also need to look after myself better in regards to my diet and exercise! Ive got pretty lazy recently and dont have an excuse as to why!

  • Thanks for the well wishes.

Chronic cough (a feeling in my throat that I could cough at any time).

    Clearing my throat often.

Pain between shoulder blades, noticeably prominent when inhaling.

Ache at base of neck with slight crackle every time I turn my head.

    Hot head and neck.

    Tiredness.

    Chronic tinnitus.

    Apart from that, I’m fine!

But it’s all relative. There are people on this site with serious illness already diagnosed going through harrowing treatments, so at least for now, I’m counting my blessings.

  • Aw I'm sorry for all you have going on! Seems when one issue resolves you get another one doesnt it! I have tinnitus aswell, regular tinnitus and pulsatile. Its annoying hearing your pulse in your ears lol!

Maybe your issues are random and not related. Either way I hope they lessen for you and resolve! Fingers crossed your CT appt comes soon!

I think I'm going to contact my doctor tomorrow and see what she wants to do about my fevers etc. She did say the glands in my neck are up slightly but not much. Not sure if thats related or not!

  • Pulsatile tinnitus must be really annoying. Puts my ‘white noise’ into perspective a bit.

I read that you have allegedly had tonsillitis. I concur with you that you’d expect a sore throat in that case. I’d be sceptical too if I was told that, but only because I’ve never  heard of any cases of painless tonsillitis.

Are the glands in your neck tender and movable?

My understanding of Lymphoma symptoms is that the affected lymph node tends to be large, hard and often painless. A colleague of mine got it and (touch wood) has been in remission for a while now. His first symptom was a large, firm, painless node. The chemo was very effective though and he took it in his stride.

I am not medically trained but, for what it’s worth, I’m convinced you are fighting an infection and nothing more. I’m not belittling your symptoms nor your  obvious concern...........you are right to seek more answers from your GP, but I suspect the fever will fade in the coming weeks, fingers crossed

I hope I’m just being a wet lettuce over my chest issues and that I soon get to feel stupid for making an unnecessary fuss.......I want that scenario!

  • Thank you. I hope you are right about both of us.

About my tonsils, although there was no pain there was actually puss on my tonsils aswell so it does seem like they were infected! But who knows, I just assumed I'd get pain and never did!

The glands in my neck, I honestly dont know as I cant actually feel what she is feeling so unsure what way they are and if they are moveable etc. Ive felt my neck but cant feel what shes on about! She just said they are up slightly but not much. I also didnt worry too much about this as I supposidly had tonsillitis so this could make them swell up.

I really hope this is some kind of weird virus that will go away. But the fevers are weird in that they come and go. Two weeks ago I got 4 days of a normal temp then it came back again. I really thought it was away and was so disheartened when it came back! I was on holidays at the time and it ruined it for me :(

Hopefully you are making an unnecessary fuss! I bet you cant wait to get this scan behind you! Its hard when you are so worried about something to get it off your mind. Im still checking my temp alot. The doctor told me not to check it so often but its hard! I take my thermometor out with me when I leave the house. (My partner looks at me like I'm crazy, I try not to check it in public anymore haha)

Im so glad to have found people who understand and to talk to. Think my family are sick of me going on about it so i thank you for that :)

  • No need to thank me, a problem shared......etc. It’s a two way street, as I benefit from the support too!

Can I ask your age? With a young child, I’m assuming you’re waaaaaay off menopause age, but hormonal changes are known for causing temperature fluctuations - hence my (probably idiotic, and ungentlemanlike) question!

If the puss has gone and there are no other oral issues, you might just be getting over the infection still.

As for your neck nodes, I’m sure I’ve read that lymphoma affected nodes are usually obvious (larger than normal), so that’s reassuring at least.

  • Haha no its okay, I dont mind you asking my age. Im 33. I know that hormonal changes can cause hot flushes etc but wasnt sure if it can cause actual fevers.  What age are you? (just to be nosey lol)

Well she did say my nodes are larger than normal though? But I'm sure she knows by feeling them if they are hard or sinister feeling etc. I also do think my throat looks slightly inflamed, but I"m not a doctor lol
