Hoping for the best, fearing the worst!

Hi,

Total newbie here!

After 7 weeks of symptoms (painful nodes in left and one in right top of windpipe which I notice when swallowing food, intermittent pain in armpits, stiff left side of neck, fatigue and now, night sweats), I am seeing an ENT specialist tomorrow late afternoon.

Like a fool, I’ve resorted to Dr Google, and this has made sleeping a bit of a challenge (along with the night sweats that began a couple of days ago).

I was wondering if there would be obvious signs that a cancer has spread beyond the neck (I know I might be lucky enough to have some full-on infection, but I’m trying to prepare myself for bad news)?

Thanks in advance for any guidance or stories from people with similar symptoms.

All the best to everyone on here.

Dave

  • Neck ultrasound considered normal, but fatigue, fever, night sweats and shortness of breath all still prominent. GP referred me for a chest X-ray and I’m now sat in the Department Reception clinging on to the hope that it’s GERD or an infection!

Sorry to whinge, I’m just so nervous right now!

  • Hi Dave, have you had any answer yet for your symptoms? I keep getting sweats and fevers which has me worried sick.

  • Hi Smoore 921,

A fair bit of water has flowed under the bridge since April. In summary:

That chest X-ray was clear and the shortness of breath faded away over the next 2 weeks.

I developed eye floaters, chronic headache, mild balance problems when walking and chronic tinnitus by the end of April (but night sweats began to fade).

Brain CT and MRI both showed no tumour (thankfully).

Balance issue and headache has gone but I have neck pain (X-ray showed mild spondylitic wear and tear) and the tinnitus has been confirmed as set in for life (higher frequency hearing is degraded above 2kHz, but was told it’s to be expected in a 49 year old).

I have had a chronic cough (6 weeks so far) and back pain with a raised temperature of 37.3 degrees (2 weeks so far) and a further chest X-ray has shown scarring in lower left lobe. Three courses of antibiotics have had no effect so I have been referred for a CT scan and will probably undergo a bronchoscopy then give a sputum sample pending the outcome of the scan.

If I wasn’t already diagnosed with bronchiectasis and a hiatal hernia, I’d be very worried about the CT rather than just......worried. I really need to lose this *** cough!

2019 has been a year to forget so far!

Hope your night sweats fade away soon.

  • Im sorry you have so many symptoms and still no answer. I hope you arent waiting too long for a CT scan. Thats good your temp is down to 37.3. Was it higher than that when you were getting fevers? My main symptoms are the fevers, they come at night and go up to around 38c and stop me sleeping. Ive had no tests yet just bloods

  • Hi,

Are the night sweats your only symptom?

I recall mine being coincident with a temperature of 38 deg C also.

Until a couple of weeks ago, my temperature had been normal for quite a while - the 37.3 is higher than normal.

My concern is the threat of mesothelioma. I am a child of the 70s and there was a refuse tip about a mile from my house which my friends and I used to visit to gather wood for a bonfire every Autumn for several consecutive years. There may have been asbestos waste there. My first year in halls at University was based in portakabin ‘accommodation’ which had asbestos lined walls, and I lived in a house for 15 years (originally built in 1972) whose garage had a corrugated asbestos roof. Apart from the refuse tip, none of these involved dangerous ‘broken’ asbestos, but the risk has definitely been there.

I am eagerly awaiting the letter with my scan date, but was told the results would take 3 weeks to come back!

  • Have you discussed with your doctor about the asbestos? How do they test for that?

The fevers are my only symptom. Im not getting proper night sweats. Im waking up hot and sweaty when I have a fever at night. But not actual night sweats. Just an on and off fever thats been going on over 3 weeks now. I need to go back to the doctor and see what she says about it. She was hoping it was viral and would go away

  • Yes, the pulmonologist still believes it’s low risk as I haven’t been working in an environment containing airborne asbestos fibres (he said these people are most at risk). Still, I’ll not rest easy until the CT shows something benign and treatable.

Any of your nodes sore (neck, armpit or groin)? Sounds like an infection to me. It can take a couple of months to shake them off, or you can catch several in succession. As a father of twin 4 year olds, I’m in the firing line as they regularly bring home whatever’s doing the rounds at nursery!

  • Did they give you an idea how long you would have to wait for a CT? The waiting and not knowing is the hardest part!

I've no sore nodes or anything. I'm trying to tell myself its some sort of infection, but then surely I would have other symptoms :( I just dont know what to think. 3 weeks ago my temp was 38.2 and the doctor said I had tonsillitis but my throat wasnt even sore. Last week the doctor said my throat is fine now but I'm still getting these fevers 3 weeks later. Also, for the last 2-3 months Iv randomly been waking from my sleep shaking so I think the fevers have been going on a while

  • Several days before I receive a letter, so could be a week or so before I get scanned.

The lack of other symptoms makes it difficult for a GP to pinpoint the issue or refer you to a specialist who could pinpoint the issue. I recall being paranoid about Lymphoma (see earlier in the thread) but I also had inflamed neck nodes, i.e. sufficient symptoms that supported my paranoia.

However, I can understand how frustrated you must be feeling given the lack of any clues and the 3 weeks of unexplained fever so far. My GP was adamant I had multiple viral infections and she may have been right. I’ll be more convinced if my CT scan shows no malignancy.

Needless to say, I hope you are taking vitamin C daily (to boost your immune system) and perhaps paracetamol last thing at night to combat the fever. The latter suggestion in particular is not coming from a medical professional so take it with a pinch of salt!

  • A week wouldnt be too bad, I hope you do get it that quick. Then I suppose its the wait for the results too isnt it!

Did you have any other symptoms to point towards a viral infection? I just find it weird that I have no symptoms. Im wondering can you have a viral illness with no symptoms.....

I havent took paracetemol, I guess I dont want to mask whether the fevers are still happening or not! My biggest problem is just staying off google! Lol
