Lump and swelling in breast..

Hi all. So about 4 weeks ago I kept getting a sudden sharp pain very briefly in my left breast, it only lasted seconds at a time. I wasn't overly concerned. The following week whilst showering I noticed a lump at the upper front area of my breast. So, I went to the Drs last week, he confirmed that he too could feel an irregular shaped lump and done an urgent referral to the breats clinic. He said i will be seen within 2 weeks. . So, since then I have noticed another lump under my armpit on the same side and today my breast has swelled quite noticably. It has been 8 days since I visited the G.P and i still haven't had an appt so I took it upon myself to call the hospital, their response was that they have no appts and I will hear as soon as one becomes available. I'm going out of my mind here with worry.

I'll just add that although the lump is completely painless, the area between my armpit and side of breast is very tender. I'm hoping that Maybe i may be going through early menopause and the hormones are causing all of this. ( I'm 38, but had a hysterectomy 2 years ago)

Thankyou for reading my essay and apologies.

  • Hi there,

i recently git a referral to the breast clinic for a lump and like you was under the two week wait. I too was told no appointments would be available within two weeks and it would be more like 3/4. I contacted the PALs department at the hospital and complained as we should be seen under the two week wait, and I also contacted my local MP. I was frustrated because I could pay £650 private and see the very same consultants within 72 hours and expressed that there should be some governing/drafting them in to run more clinics when they can’t meet the NHS demands.

i also contacted my GP and advised that where they’d referred me to was not able to see me within the timescale and that they would need to find me somewhere else that could. They tried their best and did come up with one, but the reality was I had to give up my original referral if I went ahead and there’d be no guarantees of being seen sooner.

unfortunateky you need to shout out to be seen at the moment, luckily I managed to get seen within 2 weeks and 2 days in the end and all was good. I’m only here now as three days later my mom was admitted to hospital and turns out she’s had a lump 8n her breast for 8 years that she’s not told anyone about!

    good luck and do persevere.

PS - it could well be perimenopause, but you’re doing the right thing in getting things checked properly.

  • Thankyou so much for your reply. I'm seriously going out of my mind with worry! I'm sure it will all be fine but until I have the relevant tests I won't think of anything else.
