Discolouration of nail

Hi all

Not sure where to turn so thought i would put a post on here for some advice.

I noticed a few months ago i had a light grey pencil like line that runs from my cuticle to the end of my nail. After much research "which did'nt help" i attending the doctors. The doctor just said it is nothing to worry about and probably trauma to the nail.

So i left feeling confident with what was said, with no more worry. Until i recently attended a nail parlour to have a pedicure to notice an other line on my little toenail. This line is darker and seems to go under my cuticle. Why do i have two totally different lines and in different places is my main concern.

Please any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Leroy1707,

Don't use Dr Google - as you have found it just scares you & the content isn't usually up to date information.

Melanoma under the nail (subungal) is rare & it's even more rare to have it under more than one nail so it may be that, particularly your toe nail, may be caused by trauma (tight fitting shoes or walking too far in the wrong type of shoes)? That said, I would return to your GP (perhaps pick a different one at the practice) and ask them to look at both nails. Meanwhile, take photos of both nails in case either or both change while you are awaiting an appointment.

Hopefully it will turn out to be fine. Please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
