anybody know anything about follicular lymphoma

My husband found a lump in his arm pit.  G.P sent him for scan and biopsy and results came back today all in all everything was done in record time.  blood test , scan, biopsy, .specialist told us its follicular lymphoma, a type of blood cancer and its a watch and wait to see what happens next ? surely its cancer so it should be chemo or some type of treatment.  what does watch and wait mean .they just gave us a small booklet and said he would receive a letter in the post to for a pet scan.  anyone know anything about follicular lymphoma.

  • Hi, I don’t have follicular lymphoma but one that has the same treatment as it. There are probably lots of people on watch and wait. It just means that it’s a slow growing cancer and it would not benefit for treatment yet. I’ve read many stories about people being on watch and wait for many years. I had stage 3 NHL with B symptoms. As the nodes were very enlarged at side of my lungs they decided at the multi disciplinary team meeting that I needed chemo. It’s an incurable cancer so I will be on watch and wait probably for a very long time now. The good thing is you are on the system and they will watch out for you. If your husbands symptoms change they will prob do further scans etc. I would have thought exactly the same as you if I’d been told that the first time round. Take care x

  • Thank you for your reply.

My husband is having a pep scan next week to see how many lymph nodes are swollen and if its only the 1 in his arm pit then they will give him radiotherapy , if its more than 1 he may need chemotherapy, this often gets rid of it and it may never come back.  He will have to stay on watch and wait for the rest of his life . I'm guessing that must be regular blood tests . Some people relapse every 4 - 5 years and are treated with chemo  only a mild dose and go back to watch and wait.  i suppose in the grand scale of things its not too bad compared to other cancers
