Cervical Cancer

Hi, I am currently 18 years old and I would really like peoples thoughts and opinions on this, I have been dealing with period issues for 3 years now I have always been heavy and always been on the pill since starting my periods, I was constantly at the GP for over 2 years, constant internal examinations and was advised to get a smear test when I reached the age of 25, I have been to see a gynaecologist and was told that I had a slight cervical ectropian, this was then left and I was told I was fine. I then went back to the GP’s and they told me I had endometriosis, I am still having problems 3 years later from starting periods, and have been told I have cells on my cervix but I am too young to have a smear test on the NHS, my mother had cervical cancer at a young age, my symptoms persist of pain during sex, bleeding constantly (even when on the depo injection) lower abdomen pain, lower back pain, and a lot of discharge,

does anyone have any opinion on this?

Is it worth me paying privately for a smear test?

I have an an appointment to see colposcopy in April, but feel as though I should pay privately?

  • Hello EllieB2001,

Thank you for posting. Given your situation and your family history, it might be worth getting a second opinion and asking whether you could be given a smear test despite your age or ask your doctor for advice on going private if they will not allow you to have it on the NHS. You can find out more about getting a second opinion here. Make sure you mention to the doctor that your mother had cervical cancer at a young age as well as all the symptoms you have had. Your doctor will be in the best position to advise you on what to do and point you in the best direction given your particular circumstances.

    Best wishes,
