Inadvertent Asbestos Exposure Concerns

Hi Guys

i have been working in a building built back in 1994 for over 10 years now as a maintenance worker, we were told there were no asbestos in the building and it said so in the asbestos register which was completed by the previouse owners, the builing employs over 600 people.

over the years we have been fixing and removing all sorts of kit including massive coils on air handling units were we have had to change the gaskets on, these gaskets have been changed back as far as 8 years ago, to completely remove the gaskets we have had to file, wire brush and wipe off the gaskets which causes a lot of dust and debris.

a new maintenance worker started and said that the gaskets could contain asbestos? for over a year we have been trying to convince our manager to complete another test, in the end he did and it has brought up that 90% of the 100s (600+) of gaskets contain asbestos which are fine when undisturbed and low risk. with this concern we then had swabbing tests completed on all the areas were we have removed gaskets in the past and even after 8 years it was found positive for Asbestos fibres in over 10 different areas. we have been working under some of these places when people above have been wire brushing causing dust and debris particles.

since this has been found out all works has stopped and deep cleans of these areas have been happening, the place of work have sent us for brething tests at a specilist.

my question is this - i would like my partner of 8 years to have this test completed due to the fact that for the past 8 years washes my clothes which is a known secondary exposure, but the specialist is saying she wont need testing because i have had the all clear? this sounds ridicoulus to me as the doctors cant tell if i have been affected yet due to the fact it takes up to 30 years for it to develop. secondary exposure is known to be just as bad and no limit of exposure can still cause Mesothelioma and other related diseases. the test would make sure she is ok today and also log down that she has been tested so that in the future if the tests are taken again and there is a difference at least this can be looked at?

for the past 3 years my partners respiritory problems have been getting worse.

long winded i know but if anyone has infomation that would be great.

cheers

  • Welcome to the forum Dave although I'm sorry for the reason you've joined us.

Have you discussed this with your local doctor? If not, you could book in to explain your situation and see what they suggest.

I'm not sure if you've come across this yet but the HSE website has a lot of information about asbestos and one of our lovely regulars [@Annieliz]‍ has a lot of knowledge and experience in this area so I'm going to connect you with her to see if she can help as well.

Fingers crossed you can get this resolved soon Dave.

    All the best,

  • Hello Dave.  I don't pretend to be an asbestos expert but I am happy to share what experience I have had having spent most of my career working in local authority housing (I am now retired).  During my earlier years as a Housing Officer I was responsible for overseeing the repairs needed in my patch and eventually - after moving through various management jobs of increased responsibility - was responsible for managing the repairs contracts and budgets in a good-sized area of the borough.  During the 1980s there was still a lot of asbestos of various kinds in the properties and where we discovered damaged asbestos we called in a specialist company to have it removed.  The tenants never had any protection while all this was going on and neither did I or any other staff member.  The specialist company did have protection as they were doing this kind of work all day every day.    Around the end of the 1980s most of the dangerous types of asbestos were removed and gradually everything was taken out.  As I moved up the chain of responsibility I took on board information I could glean from representatives of the HSE.  They, quite rightly, always looked at the worst possible scenarios however unlikely they were.    Nobody working for the council spent all their working days with asbestos and fortunately nobody appears to have contracted any forum of asbestos illnesses.  I say this with some confidence as I still live in the area, still have contact with the people with whom I worked (both residents and staff) and even the local paper who loved to run down the local council have never had any stories of this type!  I would mention that I am also a member of a local political party and so am still fairly knowledgeable about what is happening locally.  Before I worked for the council I had lived in India for some time where I contracted pulmonary tuberculosis; I only mention this because over the years I have had several check-ups and there have never been any indication of signs of asbestos problems.  I - as is usually the case - washed my own clothes at home all the time I worked for the council.    I don't pretend to know much about the legal niceties of what has happened to you (someone should be looking at the previous owners and whover it was who certified the building as asbestos-free however) and am not the person to advise you; you might wish to talk to your GP if you want your partner to have testing done.  Best wishes.  Annie
