Worried!

Hi all, I have no one else to turn to so I'm hoping you will be able to help, I started with a change in bowel habits late 2017, since then I am either really constipated or have really loose stools. I have noticed blood when I wipe but no blood in the stools. I have also noticed mucas and my stools are sometimes green. I never feel like I have emptied my bowel, it feels as is there is a blockage there! I went to my GP for a medication review and mentioned that I had been incontinent which had really upset me as I'm only 29. She sent my for some blood tests and has refered me to a gastroenterologist. My bloods have come back that I'm anemic and have abnormal liver function. My appointment isn't for over 3 months. Am I over reacting or am I right to be worried?

  • Hello and thank you for posting a question,

I am sorry to learn about your situation.

There are guidelines about who should be referred urgently for bowel cancer. People who fit these criteria are usually seen within a couple of weeks. People who do not fit into these criteria may need to wait to be seen. Often this wait can be a few months. If you are interested you can read the urgent referral guidance here.

If you look at the guidance you will see that doctors should consider an urgent referral in adults aged under 50 with rectal bleeding and  other specific unexplained symptoms or findings. Among the findings they list is iron deficiency anaemia. You mentioned that you are anaemic, if this is iron deficiency anaemia (there are other types) and your doctor does not have an explanation for it then perhaps you do fit the guidelines to be seen more urgently. But as I am not directly involved in your care and do not know the full details of your situation I cannot know for sure. So as you remain concerned do discuss this again with your GP.

As you have contacted us I would imagine that you are concerned about cancer. For what it is worth, bowel or another type of cancer, is very unlikely in someone of your age. So the chances are that something less serious is wrong. But it does sound like your symptoms are having an impact on your quality of life and so I do hope that you are able to get this sorted out soon.

Please get back to us if you have any other questions.  If you would like to telephone  the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Jean
